I agree that Scarlet Pussy, Feel U Up and Girl are over-rated.

But not La, La, La. That's one of the best songs in the history of the world. The edit isn't anything special, but the full version kicks serious ass. That bass solo will curl your hair!

What I really love about La, La, La is the way it slowly evolves from a stripped down arrangament with delicate vocals to an explosive cacophony with unmatched intensity.

You're certainly selling it to me. Honestly it's probably been about 15 years since I last attempted to listen to it. I have the 12" version somewhere but I don't think I've ever tried to listen to it. I'll give it another spin and see if my opinion has changed but it's just a song I've never been able to get into.

Definitely listen to the 12 in. The song doesn't really get good until after that fade out. The bass solo comes pretty soon and it's off the f'ing hook. And the song just keeps building and building. By the end there's so much going on it's hard to take in. Every time you listen to it you hear something different.

There was a thread here started by someone named bluefish, titled - "Moonbeam Levels...i dont get it", started on june 19, 2008, and everyone here back then, was bashing the song (rightfully so)...fast forward to 2023, and certain people somehow have elevated this song to greatness...strange development.

This forum also used to eviscerate albums like Come and The Rainbow Children. Things change.

Or even The Gold Experience. Even I was drinking the TGE kool-aid back in the day. Now I'm a borderline TGE hater. And there are clearly more of us now vs. then.

And really, "Moonbeam Levels" isn't that great, it's just "Free" is that awful. I would even advocate replacing "Free" with a minute long interlude of Prince playing the kazoo, that doesn't mean I believe his hypothetical kazoo funk to be top-shelf material or anything...

Horny Pony should've been on Diamonds and Pearls. Such a fun little ditty. OK, maybe it's better as a B-Side!

See now that's top-shelf Prince right there. There's far worse hypotheticals out there than replacing anything with that classic.

D&P's a tad stilted to me despite clearly trying to be a "fun" record. "Horny Pony" definitely brings the genuine fun and genuine bounce.

“Free” is a great song.I love the message and that melody….wow! will we all fight together the most important cause I honestly don’t understand why some of you dislike it so much.To me,it’s kinda like a precursor to what came next (Purple Rain)

Yeah that is a good point too the lyrics I quite like for the message, its just a nice little ballady tune

Boshie2000

In the album era when singles were important, the B sides were profoundly more valued then they are now and thus often included deep cuts from the album, as well as extended and/or alternate versions of the single and b sides. More so than many artists, Prince's best B sides made the radio and even charted. However once the CD era dominated, his records fell off from being near perfect, as many of what would've been b sides or completely left off the album, were now included to beef up the track list. One imagins that if every album from 1990 on only included the 9 strongest songs (his most common number between 1978-1989) that these albums would be regarded with closer praise to his 80's output. Imagine no Tony M led tracks on Diamonds and Pearls and the Love Symbol album. And both those records at 9 tracks. And the no name era as well would've been more appreciated and less overwhelming. Even Emancipation as a double album in the order of 1999 or Sign O' The Times with just 11 to 16 songs. And the unreleased Dream Factory album with The Revolution could've also been a 9 to 11 song masterpiece, even without the tracks that eventually ended up on SOTT. An artist still shouldn't be punished for producing too much work when considering he still produced at least 250 songs for himself and other artists that would be considered worthy of inclusion on any album. That's 25 albums of 10 songs each. Name any other artist with that much great music covering as much ground genre wise and with an illustration of singular immense talent, innovation and influence.

"Ronnie Talk to Russia" is GOATed, his most punk rockabilly excursion. I'll go ahead and say he played a formative role in the development of psychobilly with that one right there. You can dislike it, but putting it in the same category as "Free" is too far.
