That song and the Batman album as a whole was a turning point for me as a fan. I continued to buy every Prince release that followed but rarely found them thrilling or worth repeated listenings (The Gold Experience, MPLS Sound and Exodus being the expeptions).

After the genius displayed in his previous 8 albums going back to DIRTY MIND, this album felt like a limp and uninspired mess. Yes, there were a few songs I could pick out of the rubble that I still enjoy (The Future, Electric Chair and Arms of Orion) but the remaining tracks, especially Lemon Crush were a warning sign that something was changing and, in my opinion, not for the better.

Come is like a Top 1 album if we're limiting it to 90s...

interested in this, too, from ppg, all eras.

90s Top 5:

1. Love Symbol

2. Come

3. Emancipation

4. Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic

5. Chaos and Disorder

Crystal Ball is a "From the Vault" compilation like the extra discs of the SOTT SDE and has a bunch of previously released content.

'come' is a POS album, worst of the '90s.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

It's like he scribbled them.down, instantly recorded a first take & thought 'That'll do' half an hour spent tweaking & rewriting those lyrics would have made the world of difference.
blah blah blah

True, i wonder if he thought the project beneath him so didnt want to put in the effort. He just did it cos he needed a hit, knew it would be one, and played along as the label prob applied pressure

but lemon crush is somehow still a highlight!

Yes, it's hard to consider GB as an album from the 90s, when all the tracks except "Thieves In The Temple" were first recorded in the 80s, some even in the first part of the 80s.

.

On D&P, "Diamonds and Pearls" and "Live 4 Love" were first tracked/recorded in December 1989, but all the other tracks were first recorded in 1990-91 (as far as PrinceVault knows). That makes it the first "real" album from the 90s.

GB is like a mopping up of 80s leftovers. kinda makes sense as the film is a sort of PR sequel, but its like the end of that era really, rather than a true new beginning.

I read an interview where Burton said he just wanted the two songs, but Prince made an album and Warners forced it on him.

Yeah, I read the same thing. Burton was using 1999 and Baby I'm A Star as "placeholders" in the movie.

I think they did a pretty good job of blending the new Prince songs into the movie!

I was 17 in the summer of 1989, just graduated high school. It was a fun Batman/Prince summer!

Yeah I mean, GB came out in 1990 regardless of the origins of the songs. So going strictly by decade, it was a '90s release.

.

And yeah, NPS is fucking awesome.

Lemon Crush was one of my favorite tracks on the Batman album.

In the Summer of '89 when I was dj'ing parties I often played it and it got a good response.

I know the production sounds dated now, but in the pop landscape of '89 it wasn't that out of place.

And compared to Batdance, it's understated.

Now though I'd have to say Electric Chair is the standout track for me.

No way! It was written by Bruce Wayne! Or Batman, or Robin, or the Mad-Hatter, or whatever designator he smacked on yet another repurposed Anna Fantastic song.

The entire album is "out of place" and the arrangements are "so basic" most of the record. The beat's on this album are poor man's Prince, let alone Thriller.

Without the Batman logo I lurve it, tho. This track and "The Future" are my favs on an album full of wall-to-wall by-the-numbers generic Prince on autopilot, on shuffle mode.

[Edited 8/8/23 17:32pm]

I did not write that song
