Why did Prince include Lemon crush on the Batman album ?

Rant of the day. I listened to the Batman album again today and...

Lemon Crush seems so out of place.

The chorus is fun and all but the arrangements are just so basic, plus the beat sounds like poor man's thriller. So many things wrong with this song. He could have gifted this one to Elisa Fiorillo or something.

Am I the only one who feels this way ?

No way! It was written by Bruce Wayne! Or Batman, or Robin, or the Mad-Hatter, or whatever designator he smacked on yet another repurposed Anna Fantastic song.

The entire album is "out of place" and the arrangements are "so basic" most of the record. The beat's on this album are poor man's Prince, let alone Thriller.

Without the Batman logo I lurve it, tho. This track and "The Future" are my favs on an album full of wall-to-wall by-the-numbers generic Prince on autopilot, on shuffle mode.

This is the one track on Batman that truly seems like filler.I like the groove, but the lyrics are whack.

i guess the lyrics do suck - you're the robber at my jobba..

but I LOVE this song

and I LOVE the album

and Batdance has one of his best guitar solos of all time

Trade the cover for the cover of the Future single ... call the album "The Future" and I am thrilled

Electric Chair is a song that didn't get enough attention... and the SNL performance.. holy shit

I love the album, don't get me wrong, as I said in my OP, I don't hate Lemon crush it's just that I don't feel like it belongs to the album. I'd keep it for Raveun2thejoy lol.

Every time I hear that line, I always imagine Elmer Fudd's voice singing.
Ancient Egyptians postulated 7 souls.
Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the secret name...

It's a bittersweet song. I think IS great thanks to the wonderful mix of minimalistic sounds and the complexity of the mix.
Got a cool breaks too, very cool.
Like a click, the timing is so perfect.
Harmonies are challenger. Turns gloomy at the end.

Don't know if it fits or not, but for me, Lemon Crush is right to me.

I'd hazard a guess that he just liked it and thought in terms of flow a song of this type would fit there on the album. Perhaps if the album had cooked for a little longer it might've been switched for something else, but you could say that about many songs, in general.

.

Also I assume it's an Anna Fantastic song(?) so it kind of fits with Vicki Waiting and the general era.

All true
And yet i love it lol
Lemon crush is actually a highlight for me

So weird that the album has that auto pilot mode and yet was for such a big movie
Im still not sure i know what wb or tim burton really made of it
But i guess they thought it had enough hits on it (well partyman and batdance)
And well its batman so itd sell anyway

I love "Lemon Crush," too, don't get it twisted. Really cool track, stellar backing vocals. I just don't care for the Batman soundtrack as a Batman soundtrack.

WB probably appreciated the multi-media tie-in potential, Burton only used two Prince songs to replace the two Prince songs they played during shooting (and he made Prince do one of the songs over again--"200 Balloons" to "Trust"--and "200 Balloons" is so clearly better than "Trust" Burton probably felt weird about asking him to try for a third time), sooo, it seems he wasn't that into it.

yeah yeah other songs are barely in the background for .5 secs a pop, that's even more evidence that Burton didn't like it. Burton was more of a fan of stuff like The Cure and Oingo Boingo.

I read an interview where Burton said he just wanted the two songs, but Prince made an album and Warners forced it on him.

One of my favourite tracks of the album. I always felt it was Vicky's space, and it was there to fuel the next track, Scandalous. The basic arrangements are the trademark of the album, I guess the Lovesexy hangover was severe.

oh snap. Hopefully his Tim Burton diss track isn't buried too deep in the Vault.

"Hello, Mr. Burton? This is your conscience muthafuka..."

Also wasn't it Jack Nicholson who forced the Prince placeholder songs on-set?

the scandalous sex suite suggests it was worth it.

i mean, sly stone used to have women he wanted to have sex with record vocals that he would then overdub or erase, so its not like prince is the first artist to use hs actual music as an overture to romantic endeavours.

I think I read something about Nicholson being a fan, maybe the placeholders being his idea, but not anything about him forcing anything. But he was a huge star, so it's definitely possible.

I've always felt like it was the other way around for Prince. Take Kim Basinger, wasn't it said that he wanted to get into Hollywood as a serious actor around that time ? The Kim Basinger connection (had the relationship lasted) would have helped him a lot. Also remember that she was helping him write Graffiti Bridge.

He sent Sheila E flowers so she could join the band and I also think that he seduced her so she could STAY in the band especially since she had a lot of clout on her own and didn't need him.

It's just the impression I get from some of his "alliances", I could be wrong.

I'm going to do this for fun, run up a playlist and maybe swap a song or two around.

Also that SNL performance is one of my favorites of his, the band was SUPER tight, just absoultely amazing band.

im sure often he really thought he could make something of merit with the women he was into (as with vanity or appollonia)

or that he maybe thought it wasnt just sex, it was about more (i mean, this is prince, who wrote many songs about that exactly)

or maybe as you say, he just did it as a sort of way to get the ball rolling on things he wanted to do (ie music as his method of communication)

BUT

i also think he often worked/thought with his dick, but perhaps used music to do the talking rather than just blurt out what was on his mind

Lemon Crush is a fun little throwaway piece. Personally, I love it 😀 I think, because the Batman album was time pressured, Prince mustn't have been able to over think his lyrics so a lot of stuff made it in there where he normally would have changed it later. Just conjecture but I think this song is great fun 😎✌️🎸

Anna Fantastic has mentioned in interviews that it was inspired by her as a lemon crush was her favorite drink at the time. He probably just needed an upbeat filler track and probably wanted to impress her as well so it fit the bill.
