I often wondered how Jewish performers such as Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, etc. all have Christmas albums? Money matters more than religion, I guess . . . but I guess they could also claim they're doing it for their Christian fanbase . . . who knows.

In Prince's case, IMO it kinda came down to this: in the first half of his career, he didn't need that safety net of an easy Christmas song. In the second half of his career, as a JW he didn't celebrate/acknowledge Christmas.

I don't know that it's about money over religion. They're singers, entertainers. They create a product that people will pay them for. It's like saying money over sexuality if a straight actor plays gay, or vice versa. Or a female plays a male character, etc.

JW's disfellowship those who celebrate holidays in an effort to shock them back into submission and can be re-fellowshipped if they are seen as repentant. I call it emotional extortion, but why get twisted up with words?

With Prince, it was his religion, but also - he was just never going to do what the mainstream did. Christmas albums are cute and all but they sorta meld together. And that's the last thing Prince wanted - was to disappear into something like that. I'm sorta glad he never did a Christmas album. "Another Lonely Christmas" is an ironic antithesis Christmas song. So - that tracks.

Footnote: He was raised Seventh Day Adventist. They believe that there is no biblical basis to celebrate things like Christmas, but if parishioners choose to celebrate the holiday, the church doesn't interfere with that (like JWs). So - it's an "up to you" sorta gig. So he was in that realm until close to 2000 probably. It was neither here nor there.

Princereddit also had that another person's trash is another's treasure concept "person writes their least favorite Prince song, then person who responds has to say why they like it. and then lists their least favorite, then next person says why they like it" etc.

That's also prime for ripoff. It actually works better here because we don't have that deranged upvote sheep format.
