Help! All My Dreams lyric!

One of my personal favourites All My Dreams, today I read I’ve been getting a particular favourite part wrong all these years.

At 2m30s in… Prince sings “just fun, nothing ethereal” according to Lyrics sites.

I however, thought it was “just fun, nothing serious” with the “nothing serious” said with a lisp for comedic effect!

Am I really wrong?

BOTH sound correct to my ears but “nothing shherioushhh” is how I always sing along.

Who’s right?

Nothing "ethereal" wouldnt even make sense...those lyrics site online are wrong ALOT...somebody there was over-thinking it...that lyric was clearly Prince playing...just like he often did

It's "ethereal." Us on the DTT noted that.

Serious has three syllables. Ethereal has four, and it's clear he's speaking four syllables.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I clearly hear his singing "ethereal".

Does it make sense? I'd argue yes. It could be an ironic reference to the fact that he goes on to sing in an ethereal voice (the slowed down voice some people compare, incorrectly, to the Bog George voice).

And even if I'm wrong, so what? Prince's lyrics often make no sense. That's not proof that they're being misheard.

It's 110% "ethereal". The word ends with a very clear L sound, not an S (or TH in the case of a lisp).

Normally when questions like this come up, I can kind of hear what other people are saying, even if I disagree with their interpretation. But in this case, I don't hear anything that remotely sounds like "therious". It's absolutely "ethereal". And why would Prince talk with a lisp?

Its a cultural thing...and he's saying serious, not "therious"...he's just saying it playfully ghetto...like he would say other things from time to time...Lol, "ethereal" makes no sense in the context of the song, or what he was saying. Or how he was sayings things at that point in the song...when he says it, he's using almost the same vocal mannerism as he does when he says, "dont hate me cause im beautiful" at the beginning of "Prettyman"

"Just fun...nothing serious"...serious is virtually the opposite of fun in the cotext of the song...

Why on earth would ANYONE say "just fun...nothing ethereal.." do yall even know what ethereal means??....Lol...it would make absoltely no sense to say that in the context of the lyrics and spirit of the song, before or after he says it...and i aint hearing no four syllables ...yall need better headphones and/or speakers.. cool...if no ridiculous lyric site that consistently gets hihphop and soul/r&b lyrics wrong, wouldve said it was ethereal, no one in their right mind would think thats what he's saying...and sometimes when people of a specific culture or background or neighborhood says something in a playful manner, you need someone from that culture, or background, or neighboorhood to explain to those not as familiar. 😎

Clearly and only "Nothing Ethereal". It fits the ethereal sound to the music, especially the opening ethereal sounds.

As I already pointed out:

A.) It does make sense.

B.) Even if it didn't, that's not proof he's not saying it. Many of his lyrics make no sense.

The word he said ends like an "L". How in the world could "serious" be pronouced, even in a playful way, that ends with an L?

RJOrion and ChocolateBox3121 all knew Prince and hung out every weekend and went to all his crazy secret parties. They really were good friends. We should trust RJOrion on this one.

Well I'm from said culture and he didn't say "serious". Unless we've got different versions I suggest you get a box of Debrox razz . "Serious" would make more sense in this context but when did Prince ever color within the lines in those days?

He’s clearly saying ‘serial’ — as in ‘just fun (a one-off), nothing serial (repeated).

This makes perfect sense.

This explains the clear ‘el’ sounds at the end, while also supporting the lisp theory.

This puns brilliantly with the Captain Crunch reference.

This is all bollocks though, as he obviously say ‘ethereal’.

The music has an ethereal feel. Also the song is about all the singer's dreams and he is saying that the dreams are just for fun, nothing ethereal.
