For me personally, it was a very low point in Prince's career. He had avoided releasing cover versions officially, and had kept covers exclusively to concert performances. Emancipation had not one, not two, not three, but FOUR covers.

On the album he was "born to make." It was very disappointing, because clearly these tracks, including "Betcha By Golly...", were filler.

The video, of course, would end up being a very sad document of what could have been. The original, an absolute classic, that should have been left alone.

But the recording itself is not bad.

Refresh my memory besides this one, One of us and Lala means I love you, what's the fourth one ?

It's a meh to me. I don't highly dislike it but it's not his song to my ears, if that makes sense. I love other covers he's done but this one I could skip.

Thank you.

Well "Betcha by golly wow" is my least favorite out of the 4 covers.

I looked it on on youtube.Kinda lame imo
Maybe it's because I first heard the prince version and it's the one I am use to

Would "soul sanctuary" count as a cover version?

Yeah I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I grew up with the Stylistics version. And that's version I prefer. I really love some old 60s/70s R&B

those stylistics songs are lovely, sweet, almost transcendent, but at the same time, very saccharine too, so i wouldnt blame anyone for not liking them that much, if listening with modern ears.

has anyone read any good interviews with prince about the covers he chose?

i only found this (mojo magazine in 1996):

S.S. : Why did you record the covers on Emancipation?

prince: Betcha By Golly Wow (by The Stylistics) is a song I grew up with. Bonnie Raitt is a good friend of mine, and I think I Can’t Make You Love Me is one of her best songs. And One Of Us is a great melody and an important statement. It’s one of those songs I would advise every artist to perform at least once.

I assume u heard Prince's version before Bonnie's. While the latter will break your heart, the former completely misses the point (unrequited love). Prince turns it into another seduction song. I guess he was too far removed from his days of being rejected.

(Prince's version predates George's btw. Tho Candy did it before Prince.)

Prince makes i cant make u love me.. but can we at least fuck anyway? (or i cant make u love but but can i make you fuck me?) The scandalous unrequited sexual advances suite lol.

I like his version if you take it on its own merits and dont compare with the original, but if you want the meaning to stay as it was, then youll be disappointed. Its like another love with 3EG. The original is quite beautiful and melacholy. But prince cant really sing about rejection like that, so he makes it more like triumphant vengeance lol

I don't know how you could take a beautiful, sad, sad song like that and just gut the sadness, the soul of it, right out. Just wrong headed. It's like if someone took Sister and made it into a love ballad. Turned it into a wedding song. Just why.

From what I can tell, Prince almost certainly recorded it months before Michael performed it - Prince is believed to have recorded it in late spring/early summer '96, while the MTV Unplugged performance was 11th Oct '96.
