Stories of your Prince purchases

For me it was the Hits VHS
This was back in 1996 or so.Before Amazon and online shopping was a thing.
I wasn't the one to purchase it because I was only 7 years old at the time
There use to be a music store in the next town over.My father did some shopping there.Got back from the store and told me there was a prince hits VHS at the store. My 60 something grandfather was sitting in the same room.I turned to him and he knew what was up
So about 30 minutes later we on our 30 minute drive to get the prince VHS.
The feeling of getting a Prince release that you didn't have or even know anything about was truly something special
Bought the VHS and watched it as soon as we got home
I remember watching it and somehow I got it into my mind that there HAD to be a music video for every song Prince ever made
I didn't know any better at the time
Then there were was the memory of going to target on release day to get lotus flower
I actually had that day planned out and marked on the calendar

First Prince album I bought was Purple Rain. June 25th, 1984 I was visiting my grandmother and my oldest cousin was there he was 21 and I was 14 so I looked up to him somewhat.
He was listening to the Purple Rain album that he bought earlier that day and said you need to get this! So when we left my mother went to the Mall and I stopped by the Sound Shop and got Purple Rain. They were blasting the album in the store and it was starting Take Me With U.

Another memorable days was walking in seeing Parade and Sign for the first time.

I wish I was alive in 1984 for the purple rain craze
Bet that was amazing
I can relate to seeing the prince albums at the store
There use to be this big music shop called "Manifest"
This was during the middle 90's when people actually bought cds
There was this Prince section and I would just get my rocks off by just gazing at the album covers.i think I went every other weekend and each time I would get a new prince release
I found a cassette tape that had both "dirty mind" and "controversy" albums on it.Also they kept the expensive cds in this huge glass case. For months I would stare at it because it has the 3 disc "Hits b sides" and back then it was really expensive
I miss those days but at least they live on in my head

I srill remember the day I heard "When Doves Cry" on the radio for the first time. I stopped in my tracks and was mesmerized. I thought--wait, was is that Prince?! eek When the DJ confirmed it was I rushed out that week to grab the cassette and played it incessantly for the rest of the month. lol And when the movie came out I don't know how many times I went to see it... lol

I was only 10 when 1999 came out, which was my first Prince album. My mom bought it for me.

I think the first Prince purchase I made with my own money (allowance) was the LGC/EC 12" single.

Being about as early as possible in a regional area in Australia to be a fan, just listening to Prince was hard pre Controversy. It involved listening to 2JJ after midnight when the local radio station shutdown and similcasted the overnight 2JJ broadcasts from Sydney. Also, there were various late night TV music video shows.

Early on finding records for sale was hard - from memory I was not able to get "For You" until after I got "Purple Rain". I ordered some releases from overseas but these could take months (none failed to arrive or arrived damaged!).

Pre legal, semi-legal, and otherwise digital availability I spent an awful lot on eBay and long gone exporting wrecka stows. I have not told my wife how much I paid for "One Night Alone" or the full "Crystal Ball" set. You learned if it is available, grab it, if online don't expect it to stay - extract it and back it up.

I became a Prince fan during the Parade era. I bought Sign O The Times the day it was released, but that memory isn't super clear in my head. The first very clear memory is of buying the 12 inch for Alphabet Street. I remember that because I skipped school so that I could be at the record store the moment they opened their doors.

From 1984 to 1988, I bought a copy of every Prince album I could find. It was hard, as my family didn't have much money, so every album i bought was carefully planned.

Then came Lovesexy.

I looked at the cover and glanced over at the clerk. I decided that my 16 year old reputation was not worth placing that cover in front of that dude and paying for it. This was the 1980s, after all.

I didn't buy another Prince album until 1996. Emancipation

I remember my brother buying the Purple Rain album on a family holiday to Great Yarmouth in 1984. I was mesmerised when he opened it and out popped a purple vinyl. It was like a Charlie and the chocolate factory golden ticket moment. Prior to that we’d had the the Little Red Corvette/1999 7 inch but things blossomed from there.

On my bro’s birthday in 1985, Around The World In A Day came out and I remember us buying it and listening to it together, again being intrigued by the colourfulness of Doug Henders cover art and the apparent psychedelic change of direction.

Next big thing for me that I remember was the bootleg album The Royals Jewels, with its mis-spelt/incorrect titles.

From there, I pretty much bought every release prior to that, every associate artist release and everything ever after. It still continues, if only there was anything else this ‘estate’ could release. Fingers crossed for 7/7 for a release or at least something big this year.

Probably 1987 I was at Tower Records. Looking up prince
They had a 12" single Little Red Corvette "dance mix" I was like huh? This must be fake. Dance mix? It had an over sized shrink wrap, the album cover was very thin 😂 I've been collecting singles since 1984. I'll pass this one up. Come to find out years later it was official import doh! never saw it again.

1987.
30 minutes away, a few towns over. There was the big mall.
Across the street was this little whole in the wall record store. I noticed it as we passed by. Rasputans Records! I walked in and wow! A new and used record store, this was new to me. Ran straight to the prince section. Amazed at what I saw. Picture disc that I've never seen. Just when I thought I had all the 12" singles. Wait there are imports!? And used singles that I never seen. They even had lovesexy cd singles for like $15/20. But as a young teen that was out my budget. Plus who even owned a cd player in 1988? I was still on cassette and vinyl. By 1990 I could afford cd singles lol oh and bootlegs

Back in early 1990.
Walking into a Amoeba Recorda store (Berkley), only discover they sold prince bootleg Lp's and cd's ! The black album on cd!
This new/used record store wss like 3 times bigger than rasputins.

I was in some random used record store in San Francisco (94/95). Looking up Prince (obviously) they had a used copy of The Beautiful Experience with 2 bonus tracks! 😶 Did they not realise it was an Japanese import. I grabbed it quick and payed right away. It was like $9.99

I was on vacation, 1991. Monterey, Ca. Walked in some random used record store. The had the Birthday promo 12" single of Gett Off for like $4.99. Then when I got the chance to listen to come to find out some of the version were exclusive to the single.

This was back in 1990. But when I returned to the store all the prince boots were gone. Me being a noob, I walked to the counter and asked what happened to all the prince bootlegs. The guy shushed me lol hes like I'll be right back. He came out with a small crate of prince stuff.

I haven't been in a record store since the early 2000s

This is a story set a long long time ago, in a place where record stores still existed, it was 1992….

I don’t have any interesting stories about official releases, but I remember when I was a teenager on holidays with my mother, I used to go into every single record store we passed by. Looking back, She was a patient woman.

So we were on the Gold Coast and I saw this sign for a record store up a long, narrow wooden staircase. As I reach the top it opened up to a gigantic space. It was full of vinyl LPs, cassettes and CDs. I was a CD man!

After an hour or so of looking through all of the CDs, I wandered into the LP section, I thought what the hell? I walked up to the prince section. To my surprise I saw albums I had never seen before. By this stage I had most official releases, and I had never seen bootlegs before in person, I don’t remember the names of the Albums, but they had song titles like export lover and a better place to die. I desperately wanted these records.

Unfortunately we had a 8 hour car trip ahead of us on a very hot day, and I was concerned the vinyls would warp, also they were $60-$70 each, and I was a teenager with about $100 to my name.

I did end up leaving with a bootleg kiss live VHS, and a copy of of lovesexy live one and lovesexy live two VHS, and no money left in my bank account. To this day, I am unsure if the lovesexy live vhs’s were legitimate or a copy.

Later that year I saw the Black album on CD for $80 and purchased it, I was literally shaking when I saw it, I knew it had been planned to be released in 87 but wasn’t. I was so excited. Of course two years later, it was officially released, at least the bootleg had extra tracks!

In 1988 at the first Rotterdam Lovesexy show in the afternoon a German guy was selling official Black Album vinyls from the back of his car and I didn't buy one thinking it would eventually be released officially, but my friend who was with me then did buy one. I think he bought it for 100 gulden (about 45 dollars back then)
Years later I bought a official 87 pressing for $1100 from a guy oon a.m.p
