Name change - what songs best address it?

hi guys

im compiling a 2 hour radio special (hebrew, isareli radio), chronicling the history and legacy of the name change.

obvious songs to be included are the likes of

my name is prince

whats my name

sacrifice of victor

emancipation

letitgo

dolphin

dinner with delores

also less obvious but worth a play - family name

pussy control

I would appreaciate more ideas for title to play, also specific live renditions where he talks directly or indirectly about his realtions with warner bros , industry and name change.

i am also looking for songs where he name checks himself

eg private joy - you belong to prince

darling nikki - your dirty little prince

etc.

thanks! ♥

Personally I always read sacrifice of victor as alias for "survivor" or the one that overcomes all and not really related to the namechanging.

Yes i tend to agree
However its relevant at least due to the fact it was widely rumored his new name is victor.

It is a bit what came first. Due to this song that was indeed the case. Reviews of the album helped this. Not sure if the non-english media picked up on the "my name is victor" without actually getting the gist of the song. It was talked about on radio and tv but all seem to stem from one or two reviews who highlighted this,.
For reference I was around as hardcore Prince fan in that era so it certainly had my attention fan wise.

I agree, and do remember that fun era also from first hand.
All the silly Tafkap stuff.
I Even remember someone picking on violet the organ grinder
And deciding his name is violet.

Wasn't that line in Fascination about Michael Jackson (so called King) and his son (Prince Jackson) who was born a month before Prince recorded the song?

Yeah. And "2 Whom It May Concern" can also be seen as a dig at Michael Jackson.

Another one that came to my mind (because you asked for live renditions)
The "Live! The Sacrifice Of Victor"-Video starts with him saying the first words of "Sacrifice" and then: "London, my name is not Prince. And it damn sure ain't Victor".

I would also play the songs where he first used one of his monikers. Christopher (Manic Monday?), Joey Coco (You're My Love?), Azifwekar, Paisley Park, etc. Touch on him hiding behind Tora Tora in the NPG, too.

You know, just as a sidenote: I always interpreted that as him sacrificing the "victory" of being successful. Success or victory is coming out on top. And he felt he had to sacrifice what could have been "success" in the public's eye (like maybe that $100M contract) to be free. He "loves it" because he sees the end game, so the journey there is arbitrary. (Much the same way Christ saw the end game of his crucifixion in saving humanity, so his endurance of the pending brutality was secondary. He did it "for the glory set before him.")

But The Sacrifice Of Victor was recorded in december 1991 and the deal wasn't signed until august
1992.

Prince later did say that he regretted signing the deal amost from the start, but I don't think he
was able to write a song about that deal and his dissatisfaction with it, 8 months prior.

hmmm

To me it is simply what is says on the tin, a slightly fictionalised account of his youth and some of
his struggles, ending up where he is today, the victor, because or in spite of the things he suffered,
experienced and sacrificed along the way.

Taken at face value it's another one of his: to succeed you have to work hard and put your all in it.

That was my first thought/response too but the record was released in the latter part of 1992.
Not sure how many versions of the yrics exist.
It could fit with what TP mentioned and I found it a nice insight..

Yeah, the timing of the $100M contract is off, but his path to being prince etc was in his head, clearly.

But your other idea is totes legit in all this.
