I liked it. West is my favorite. East is a mystery to me it seem to go way east. Time keeps on slipping into the future...

North is going south-west too. All I thought of was the airline. That ain't good. I felt each song represented sections of the US. Images spring to my mind when I listen to each song, but East it felt like it went outsde the US unless I'm missing something. It's not like I truly know more than a general vibe of the lower 48 so I'm curious. Time keeps on slipping into the future...

I would totally dig a NEWS SDE. This would be right up my ally. Everyone has diff music tastes. I only wish Prince had done more albums like this.

just by looking at the artwork to N.E.W.S. it's pretty much obvious that it's a global thing.

LOL, I wrote this post as a lark. Never expected it to get so much attention!
The idea of a Super Deluxe version of a largely forgotten toss-away instrumental album with Vault tracks like "Northeast" and ""Southwest"???!!
You guys are too much! | |

Yeah, You're not wrong. It looked cheap and awful. Par for course with indie Prince though. [Edited 5/19/23 2:20am] Formerly TheDigitalGardener etc.

Mine has a Parental Advisory sticker, Eric's blowing some big horn, a too obvious blowjob.

I like this album. Here goes how i hear and feel the first song: "NORTH" It forces you to sit down and shut the fuck up and close your eyes. I love the idea of this quartet+Prince (John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Eric Leeds & Renato Neto) in the studio. The atmophere is perfect. John and Rhonda rippling on a kind of stream with little repetitious peaks, a sit-back-and-relax beat that could go in any direction. A funky lake's surface as the basic layer. Unexpectedly at 1:36 Eric slides in from underneath, with a faint note full of air going into sound. I like that. The drizzle of a synth far away in the background give it some mystery. Prince's embalishments of a dirt sounding guitar, nearly out of tune, anouncing a coming gust. This is Erics tune. Some flute+guitar melody makes itself known around 4min, sort of a nice slow George Benson groovyness. After 4min song starts to build. 5 minutes in and Eric's fantastic bariton sax makes way. I love it when he plays the bariton sax. I love it since he played it in 'Girls & Boys.' A funky bariton sax i always liked very much. Here a slow baet goes on with Renato's keys, coming more to the front. 6:20 and it starts to sound nice with cosy samples from what seems Clare Fisher orchestration. rince sings with his guitar, and begins to lightly squeeze it with slight squeals pushing out. Back is the Madhouse-ish melody. 8 minutes in songs goes jazz-pop-rock. The Sax & Flute short notes melody make a great tune. Simple and clear, and then goes into a nice warm and soft chaotic break, some piano interlude by Renato (or Prince?), really nice, different rhythm, as if a new songs is about to begin. 10u35, Eric's back on his alt sax, songs glides and slides, no beat. A duet between piano and sax (-sex), growing synths. 11:50 and in comes the cold wind. Synths go with Prince's super silent low-fi guitar effects, and make it all go cold. 13:00 and it starts freezing. Prince's low-key guitar effetcs dissapear into silence. Just love that track.
