Data Bank (Real Version)

Sam Jennings recently posted his #my7princesongs and number 4 was 'Data Bank (Real Version)' Is there anything known about this version, I only seem to have the alternate version from PGA Graffiti Bridge. Prince Vault does not help with this either.

he means not the Time version. Or was it an odd flex? or a little trolling? Like saying "Purple Rain (Missing verse version)"

It was a weird flex, but I don't believe Sam was being facitious or mean-spirited.

And we can do without that missing verse. It's akin to the third verse of "Friends in Low Places." More legend than substance.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

There’s a missing verse in The Thunder Rolls, where it explains exactly what the wife does to the cheating husband. I heard/saw this version performed in one of Garth’s live DVDs. Doesn’t really add much to the song, but interesting to hear once.

I was referencing "Friends In Low Places."

I know - I was mentioning another instance of an extra verse.

Hmmm, I've never heard about an extra with "The Thunder Rolls." I sure do remember the hubbub around that song when it came out, though. It was early in his career, and rode the heels of "Low Places."

I suppose at that time, there were fewer songs about spousal abuse in the mainstream. So it struck a nerve. He took a bit chance that early in his career with a song like that, in 1991. But with the momentum of his career, it was actually a very smart and bold move. Good for him. "Goodbye Earl" by The Chicks covered the same subject matter.

Looking it up, I see that Tanya Tucker first recorded a version in 1988, but didn't show up by her until 1995. It had a fourth verse about infidelity and husband murder, written by Garth at the request of Tucker and her producer.

I should go listen to both versions. I was never a country guy like that (not past Urban Cowboy). Could be good to circle back to them.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
