nice little track. not talked about enough. maybe a little cheesy in its message (what's so wrong with that?) but really great melody and minimalistic arrangement. i wonder if there's anything else from this 2015/16 period that's similar to this song v.s. the mononeon whatever stuff. whatever he was onto here is a much better direrction that the purported "new mpls sound" with baltimore and pangaea

I really like this song. It would be great if there were more like it in the vault. If I Could Get Your Attention kind of has a similar vibe for me. Maybe both of these songs were intended for the same project?

I know I said I'm not in any hurry for more Prince releases but I'd buy a HitnRun Phase Three day one if those two songs, and more just like them, were on the tracklist.

More than SDE I would have liked to have a "album" every year, HNR Phase III, Roadhouse Garden, Madrid 2 Chicago... et ceterae

I agree with the cheesiness remark but I would loved to had this released in the direct aftermath of 2016 as legacy positive message.

Yes, a new "album" (plus a remastered album) annually would keep most happy, then the SDEs or specials can be as they find the time, resources, matches to anniversaries, coloured vinyl etc. with no pressure

I really like it and would love to hear an extended version. When the female vocal chants come in near the end it sounds like it could go on...

.

P himself said on Twitter it sounded great together with Ruff Enuff. They both sounded good to me on the P&M tour as well

if the people who run the estate had any brains and actually cared about Prince and his fans, maybe this would have happened… maybe it could still happen

To me, it's the first time he really captured the sound/spirit of some of his earlier work circa ATWIAD, just a really nice track - I love it - seems he was finally freeing himself from the shackles of JW and the idiology behind it all that affected his music so much.

Back on what I beleive was the final ever Peach & Black Podcast, they reviewed non-album tracks. Free Urself was one of them. All four P&B hosts liked it, but @Toejam especially loved it. IIRC, he said he considered it one of his all time favorites.

I like the song, but I'm not sure I understand the hype.

But even though I don't love it, I'd very much like the Estate to release a HNR Phase 3. I'm desperate for new music, and I'm very intrigued by the stuff we was doing towards the end of this career.

Yawn.

Sorry.

Crap song.
