funky design

let's get some love for this gem

what a great groove, great manic rapping. doesn't even need the "blow your mind" chorus to be good. back to back with mad gets me HYPED

I've always paired Funky Design with Mad, and often listen to them one after the other. I prefer Mad by far, but do love Funky Design too. I wish they were officially released on an album or more widely known, but hey, they're another two purple gems hidden in his treasure trove

eye dont think U heard me . . .

Plain aweful song, sorry.

Same for Mad.

My favorite version is the live one from Sept. 9, 1995 (from e.g. "The Park Volume Two").

Yes! the way it stops then he screams 'just when you thought it was over...'

.

Would be good to get a P vocal version with the 'blow your mind' chorus one day

like some other people on this thread, i too can't see these songs as individuals, they belong
together, like a doube a-side single.

both tracks are nice, but not extremely special. i sometimes remember them and listen to 'm
for a few days but mostly they slip my mind.

it's weird to think that funky design was at one point considered for inclusion in emancipation.

i do remember back in the day when crystal ball was released thinking 'oh hell, we get that
Tell Me How U Wanna B Done song instead of stuff like Funky Design, weird'.

I think I listened to these songs once or twice and then forgot about them.

Still sad it was never on an album. This would've totally dominated dance charts at the time.

LOL...no it wouldnt have dominated any "dance charts"...that song is garbage...people who can actually dance, wouldnt want to hear that mess...as evidenced by its relatively unreleased status.

Not crazy about Funky Design or Mad. If I had to pick one, it would be Mad.

I just listen to them both.

Funky Design is terrible. There's no chance it would have been a bit. The generally public did not take Prince seriously as a rapper.

Mad isn't as bad, but it's not great either.

Lolz at this and all the responses like it. Totally agree. FD and Mad are both bland, awkward and sonically offensive to my ears.

Happy that some of you enjoy these songs, but equally pleased that I’m far from alone in considering them to be sub-toilet grade efforts.

Not a fan of the song, even though I love me some mid-90s Prince. I remember liking this track when I was 15 and didn't know better. Nowadays I can hardly listen to it because it suuuuucks. The rap is wack, the beat is lackluster, the synth line is pretty lame. The only moment I can appreciate is the short bass solo.

Yes. And a soundboard version of the live version, although I have the intuition that it might be somewhat less "powerful" than the audience recording.

Sometimes it's hard to get involved in threads like this.

The only comment i can relate to the OP is that the cool break in "Mad" was better used in the unreleased remix of "Pussy Control".

That's so random lol

Those little random things were cool.
Similarly with the cool break that he used in both Now and Hide The Bone

Funky Design was kind of a Days Of Wild rewrite, and Mad was kind of an Acknowledge Me rewrite imo.

Yup!

You could smash 'em all into one long groove and call it "kirky's fiasco"!
