Slightly off topic. On Alphabet Street (This Is Not Music, This Is A Trip) what is the incredibly funky/trippy sound you hear from about 6:40 on untill the end, is it his guitar or a synth?

I always thought it was something similar to what he did on "It" with the vocals
being recorded through a guitar input or something like that. So I think it's his
voice, with some effect on it?

Almost the same as onm Shortberry Strawcake.

Glad of this release (mainly 4 "Positivity" & "When 2 R In Love"). Sound is great and it's totally a different listening..

keep in mind ..this is not alternate takes or demos just masters with mixdowns up & down from the multitrack playing......this is a working tape probably for the rehearsal listenings !

It's funky as hell, and if anyone could come up with something like that from a guitar it would be him!!

To my untrained ear it sounds like a guitar.

I would love to listen to a version of Alphabet Street with a more in-your-face bass. It´s Ida Nielsen´s fave bassline and it´s so hidden in the mix. Prince does some very interesting things there.

I was thinking the same thing when I listened to this mix. I would love to hear it with the bass part mixed to the fore. I seem to remember an interview with Morris Hayes where he was talking about working on the 2000s era rerecordings, and hearing some crazy things happening with the bass that were buried in a mix of that song, when he pulled out the multitracks. There are a lot of things on this particular mix down that were happening with the rhythm section that I never noticed before because of how dense the final mix was. I feel like the beats/rhythms he came with on Lovesexy were a career high and waaaay underrated.

During the live performance of Alaphabet St on Indigo Nights, about 30 seconds into the song he stops it: "On the one."

Then brings each instrument back in, one at a time, starting with the bass. "Josh, just play the bass." This happens at about 0:45. You get to hear a live version of the isolated bass for about 15 seconds before Prince starts layering other instruments on top, starting with the kick drum.

Listening to this live version of Alphabet St's isolated bass line, Prince says, "I got that in my behind. I can't... I can't even stand up straight."

Other than that breakdown to kick start the song, I'm not a fan of this live version. The arrangement is too busy with the horns. It sounds like a comedy country song rather than a funk masterpiece.

I don't think that's the original bassline, it sounds like the bassline from Hey Mr. Writer by Graham Central Station, which he started including on Alphabet St. in the late 90s.

You can make a decent extended not-stripped-down Alphabet St. if you combine this leak, the album version, and this is not music, this is a trip.

Pretty good stuff.

- Yes, I still didn´t re-listen to the Indigo Nights version, but I believe Prince´s bass on studio version had more subtle elements
