Welcome 2 America Blu Ray

Apologies if this has been covered before but does anyone know if there was any reason, other than pure greed, for the Welcome 2 America Blu Ray being locked behind an expensive Deluxe Edition? I've seen some clips of it on YouTube and it looks like a great show. I'd love the chance to buy it separately without having to pay extra for a vinyl I'll never use and all the other extras that I don't want.

there was the Japanese CD/Blu Ray set you could have bought.

Prince – Welcome 2 Amer... - Discogs

I bought that one to when it was released for €20, now it's also more expensive.

The reason is also that if they want to add something exclusive to an expensive boxset, that item better be exclusive - and not be separately available.

Selling it separately as well might be construed as 'pure greed' ....

Why do they have to go down the "exclusive" route anyway? Surely they'd make more money if they gave their customers more options when it comes to buying this stuff. I can't be the only one put off by the ridiculous price of the deluxe set.

Damn, I missed the boat on that. I know someone who lives in Japan though so do you think that edition might still be available in stores? Maybe I could get her to buy it for me and she could bring it over whenever she's coming to visit or something.

I was never going to buy this, but then it became available via Amazon for $36.50 this time last year and I scooped it up. Got the box set and, for whatever reason, never opened it. So, I still haven't watched the blu-ray, the only reason I bought the set in the first place. Go figure...

Yeah I also bought the box set when it was only $36.50 on Amazon last year.Incredible price!

The estate shouldn't taken advantage of the fans like that. I believe when it was originally on sale it was $120 for the blu-ray and cd.I think it came with a vinyl as well?
I own it but too lazy to check. I Understand why they charged so much from a business standpoint but in today's world with inflation there should have been a option to buy the blu-ray separately for $20

I have watched the blu-ray concert maybe 4 times. It is indeed amazing. The audio and picture are top notch. So I don't regret my purchase just saying it should have been more affordable

That Japan edition CD-Blu-ray combo was an okay price but very expensive to ship. Standard steamboat shipping prices were not an option, at least not when the discs came out.
>
Fortunately I was patient enough to see the price of the SDE version plummet on US Amazon. I really wanted the concert video so I bought that whole big thing that sits on a shelf like a relic while I pop in the Blu-ray every now and then--it's great.
>
I believe the manufacturers needed to work on their bundling options worldwide. I think they got it right for Japan, especially if they also have ready vinyl albums to purchase.

I would have paid them for an audio download of the show. 17 Days alone is worth it.
Such a great rendition of the song. I wish he'd performed some of his classic shit that
way more often. Not just a snippet, but the entire thing and a jam stuck at the end.

I agree 100%. I love the studio version of 17 Days. It's one of my two favourite non-album tracks (along with Erotic City) that I've heard so far. But that live version is something else. Plus, it helped introduce me to Teena Marie who has since become possibly my favourite artist ever.

I just bought another Super Deluxe set on Amazon...it's pretty much 1/2 price now. The set is awesome, the bluray is just INCREDIBLE for just 3 reasons!

1. that whole Play THat FUnky Muisc (what a solo), Holywood Swinging part

2. to watch him kid around with the drunk ladies before going into A Love Bizarre

3. to watch him do 17 Days...and to hear them sing 'lover girl'...

The video is the best we have ever seen of him.....and the audio is killer.

Duane Tudhahl edited the video...Chris James mixed the ATMOS sound.

It's currently 55 pounds on Amazon UK, which is about €70 in real money. Granted, it's a lot cheaper than it would have been a year or so ago but it's still a lot of money to spend on just the Blu Ray. I already have the CD and everything else included in the package is of no interest to me. I just want the live show but I can't justify spending so much on it. It's on my wishlist though in case it ever drops further. I'd be willing to go as high as maybe €30 for it.

Yeah, it's stoopid. Leaving $ on the table. I'd tolerate being pricegouged maybe up to 34.99, they can F off and rot for anything higher.

Why? becuase people buying physical media is a dwindling business. They include exclusive stuff to get people to buy it. end of story.

.

its currently $52 on amazon, hardly a ridiculus price for the contents of the set. a book like that alone could easily go fo 40 bucks on its own.

.

cracks me up how so many armchair CEO's know better how to make more money than the people actually making money.

Are you one of the heirs or related? Caping for the crew that brought us love symbol flip flops and Prince PJs, srsly?

Is Prince's artistic legacy Bear Family Records now? Their present business model is more insular than the man himself. They're chasing sheckels and gouging the legacy fanbase because their model for "making money" is stuck in 1997. Even the most backwoods of modern companies would use modern media formats to deliver to modern audiences, like a subscription streaming service, to actually grow potential for future, consistent capital.

See, you buy it, so cannot fathom how x number of fans will never buy it because of these archaic delivery formats. If you're willingly pricing out an entire subsection of consumers or potential consumers, That is money left on the table.

Limited physical media appeals to consumers of limited physical media. Properly marketed/available, HD concert footage could appeal to everyone.

yeahthat, and another thing is that people want to pay next-to-nothing for their streaming. They expect that. Hence, I believe sparks the marketer's focus on getting the physical media out to the cash-waving clientele.

Having a deadicated download/streaming portal would be a dreamy development, nonetheless, I agree.

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll roll out a "remastered and visually upgraded" stand-alone Blu-Ray in a few years, maybe as their sole media release in 2025 or 2026 in between waves of silk Prince pajamas and whatnot.

I don't want any books or trinkets or anything else included in the set. I just want the Blu Ray. That's it. And 52 dollars (which is irrelevant to me anyway because I'm not in America) is still too much to ask for a Blu Ray. Nevermind the €70 they're charging over here for it. So the estate is getting nothing from me. If they released the Blu Ray separately and charged €20, €25 or even €30 then they'd have a guaranteed sale from me and, no doubt, many others who have been put off by the cost of the whole set. So what's better for them? Selling a reasonably priced Blu Ray or pricing fans out of the set and forcing them to pirate the show online? You don't need to be a CEO, armchair or otherwise, to figure that one out.

to me, as I said, it is the best looking video of him HANDS DOWN. I'm not just talking about the 1080P recording...the editing Duane did is supreme. I love the man but I don't believe he always had pros doing his video work....Rave...to you remember those terrible cut aways that gave you a headache?????? The best I've seen is this blu ray...Duane gets him having FUN....like, all out laughing. It is a joy to watch him play.... the only other video that was edited this well would be the 2013 Montreaux shows...

I do love Livesexy from Dortmund but i would bet, Duane would cut it up much better.

They’ve still got at least 999 (could be a lot more) of the ‘deluxe’ vinyl, CD & Blu-ray set for sale on the Prince store, so until they sell all that stock, there’s little to no chance of any other format of it coming out, e.g. stand-alone Blu-ray or audio CD of the show.
There may or may not be something coming!

Thanks for the update. It was around 55 last time I checked. Hopefully it keeps going down until it gets to a reasonable price.
