"God is Alive" Appreciation thread

Up until a week ago I had completely forgotten about this song.
I remember back in the day I thought It was a bit too long but now I can't get enough of this track.
A pity he never released this song. The vocals by both prince and Mavis are really great and the guitar playing throughout especially towards the end makes my hair on my arms stand up when listening with headphones
I honestly feel like I've been taken to church when the song ends

I don't see it get much love when is orgers list out favorite outtakes
What do you think of the song? Like it? Love it? Hate it?

It's good for a gospel song.

It's one of the songs where you wonder how the hell he couldn't find a way to release it. It belongs in the official pantheon of music, not tucked away on a reel somewhere. Probably his last great guitar driven funk rock gospel song since Let's Go Crazy and certainly the last one for some time after.

Its definitely a top favorite of mine.

I've wondered if there may be a version with prince on lead vocals.
But I still love it with Mavis
Cant believe my purple psychedelic pimp slap pimp2

And I descend from grace, In arms of undertow
I will take my place, In the great below

Mavis only sings a single verse lol. The rest of the verses, the bridge, and the chorus are all him.

"woke me up this morning, started me on my day" etc

I like it, except the line “Up with education, down with crime”, just seems a bit kids tv, like (UK school drama) Grange Hill’s ‘Just Say No’ campaign.

Here are a couple of past org threads about it:

Lustmealways, you’d cream your pants if this 25 September 1988 configuration of Graffiti Bridge was ever released:

Side 1
1. Big Tall Wall
2. Stimulation
3. Graffiti Bridge - alternate version
4. Bloody Mouth
5. The Question Of U
Side 2
1. Beatown
2. Pink Cashmere - alternate version
3. Melody Cool - alternate version
4. The Grand Progression
5. God Is Alive
There may or may not be something coming!

I was obsessed with this song when I first heard it. It was first widely available on the "Deposition" bootleg, right? I mean: the full song, not the excerpt from the documentary.

The song is fantastic.

(Altough i am absolutely not a god lover, and find the lyrics therefor a bit silly.)

I wish for a better quality too, the one we all have is shitty.

He should've used this gem as the B-side for ''Glam Slam'' instead of ''Escape.''

I like ''Escape'' but this one is far more better.

Wasn't Prince planning to make a complete gospel album at some point?

When Prince goes gospel i always like it.

I don't think so.
It was mentioned that a Gospel album was worked on for years and someone (you know who) dropped samples of the original '88 version without Mavis Staples and a overdubbed/reworked or rerecorded version of God is Alive to some that was said to be from that project from years later.
The bootlegged version we have including the reprise was only planned for Graffiti Bridge and later on Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic '89.

I never thought much of it until I revisited it after hearing the live version on the Lovesexy tour soundboards a few years ago.
.
To think he took it off GB and put some mediocre shit on there like the title track is madness

The bootleg version is actually from a worktape for the film, dated 1989. Has a couple other "Graffiti Bridge" songs on it.

I know.
I was also told that he reprise was only for Graffiti Bridge and isn;t on Rave unto the Joy Fantastic 89.
A config tape of a early Graffiti Bridge version (not on Princevault surprise surprise) with The Grand Progression, Pink Cashmere, Beatown, Bloody Mouth and God is Alive + reprise (that was placed where New Power Generation ended up including the reprise on the released version.) was posted about back in the early 2000s.

Reeading thru this thread i believe the public must've come here over the last 7 years and thought, "Wow. Princ'es fans are really knowledgable."

He truly did become judged by the quality of his work.

Well Joris and a few of the others are the knowledgable ones, the rest of us are quite happily to be labelled idiots, either formerly by Bart or Mr Charles F Spicer🤣

I'm not really knowledgable i've onlybeen around longer than most here (online since 89/90 starting on various BBS's where the tape traders and people with real knowledge were doing there thing before they became bitter monsters) and seen some thing coming and goiung in Prince fandom.
Plus I was a religious follower of Per nilsen and Uptown.
