https://youtu.be/514dDskbh38 Marie France talks about the Purple Rain costume designs in this clip…no mention of the film Mozart, and haven’t found any link. There may or may not be something coming!

eduJ said: I always felt like the fashion during PR wasn't all that inspired actually. Not that different from Sgt Pepper's, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Adam Ant, and other new romantics before. Now Sheila's Romance 1600 attire and art direction was a definite nod/play on Amadeus. I think she even said as much in some interview. Agreed.

The elvis film by John carpenter Maybe stuff like the music lovers about Tchaikovsky Tbh if anyone did a prince biopic i think Ken Russell could have been a good choice Shame they didnt do a music video together Both sex fixated, determined to not be like anyone else, both music obsessed For anyone unfamiliar with KR - https://ew.com/article/20...e-passion/ [Edited 2/12/23 1:56am]

Kinda like how the Queen movie takes huge leaps of creative adjustment to the factual events. Prince had a pretty toxic and abusive relationship with Vanity, Andre and Dez had just left the band (one for directly creative reasons, the other on principle). Flyte Tyme and Grand Central participated in battle of the bands, which is a consistent theme in Prince's music. Prince did create a girl group, did have a rivalry with Rick James, did see massive success when he collaborated with his peers that more than rivaled that of his solo efforts (another consistent theme in his career). Anyway, my point is that Prince doesn't get enough credit for Purple Rain because we've seen a thousand permutations of the same recipe since. Like in the interview linked above where Marie France confesses that she didn't really go in to change Prince's look but just spice it up a little, Prince had some original ideas that people would exploit - sometimes in collaboration with him, sometimes in mimicry. Prince wasn't influenced by Amadeus because Prince was already doing that when Amadeus was filmed. If anything, the Amadeus team should be quizzed on whether they were inspired to make the film in part because of Prince. Especially considering he would go on to be referred to as Modern Day Mozart. Some days I feel like the org bends over backwards to prove Prince ain't shit. But he really was.

Like in the link below, the director/editor/co-writer Albert Magnoli gave several interviews in 2019, the 35th anniversary of Purple Rain, about the making of the film. What strikes me is how he collaborated with Prince and drew out the story of the Minneapolis sound/scene, making it authentic, which contributed to its success. It is Prince. Obviously there is some dramatic license, but Prince carried it off and Prince deserves immense credit for it. https://variety.com/2019/...74953/amp/ This is a good watch too: https://youtu.be/IcKBXBS9cUU There may or may not be something coming!

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn´t Prince that mentioned that part in the movie where they asked Mozart to play less notes as an example of how executives should leave artists alone to create?

Amadeus is also a work of historical fiction. Mozart's real life had little to nothing to do with that movie/play. It was entertaining, though.

Yeah it is. It's not an autobiography. No, it isn’t. It’s a work of fiction. Barely anything in that film was true.

im not trying to say prince didnt do anything important or influential. i just dont think PR was the first music biopic! i mean, seriously, you dont think prince saw or knew about (if he didnt actually see) lady sings the blues? or elvis which was in 1979? or funny girl? or more likely, a star is born, the 70s version, which isnt about an actual artist, but is basically a classic rise-of-a-musician story. prince def made one of the most succesful music biopics, but was he the first? nope. was it even one of the best? idk. either way, im sure prince knew plenty of music movies, he knew and liked the idolmaker, which his own bandmates have said.

Given how silly and frivolous that guy was in the movie I can see why Prince wasn't fully flattered.
That guy died broke and was thrown into a mass grave. Yeah I don't see that being charming to a 20-something year old. [Edited 2/27/23 15:03pm] Time keeps on slipping into the future...

. - I read that Amadeus had some things that were fiction, but he seemed to indeed have this silly side. It seems he wrote a piece called ´Kiss my ass´ (that´s very Prince) and made some silly jokes in letters. Anyway, it´s a fantastic movie and I saw it at a very young age and loved it even without knowing nothing about Mozart´s music.

Yeah I know the movie didn't reflect the real person but it's the character in that ppl point to as being similar to Prince, especially during that time. That character, while humorous, was still frivolous and silly, the combination is basically highly immature in certain basic aspects of his life that needed his father to attend to. A highly prideful 20-something yo may not be impressed with such a comparison regardless of the musical genius aspects. Time keeps on slipping into the future...

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Prince probably saw every movie that the rest of us saw, but it ruins the mystique to think of Prince sitting around watching movies.

I can tell you that Prince almost certainly saw "The Cider House Rules" and "Chasing Amy" because I happened to be in the video store the night he came in and rented those. Literally blew my mind at the time that Prince would rent movies.
