I'd say late Dirty Mind or into Controversy. That's based on the hair, actually. It wasn't quite as coifed and in check during that time as it was later during the 1999 time. He and Madonna both went through that phase of being a scrappy rebel, but sorta cleaning it up a bit, tightening the look, later on (albeit different years).

Yeah I think you're right. There's a bunch of backstage pics from the area between DM and Controversy's releases where he looks like this. I also think he started wearing more fashionable/bespoke clothing after that 1999 money came in. He was still wearing what looked like.... Jeans or corduroy or something in those videos.
