Me either

I see it.

Sparse, complex drum pattern
Dry, crispy guitars ripping thru
Stark, artful use of synths (especially stabs)

Drum machines, guitars and synths, you say? If that's the criteria, then every Prince song resembles every Prince song.

ha actually my MJ-stan mom might have said something similar once. I was trying to make conversation, "hey ma did you know ____ song by ____ was actually written by Prince." "Oh yeah." "Really?" "Yeah." "How long?" "Mmm.. Always." "Really?" "Yeah, I mean... they're kinda all the same, you know, I mean they're all... clearly... Prince."

Come on. You know they aren't that far apart.

Yes, there is way more space in the mix on It, but WDC is often touted as being THE iconic example of Prince intentionally creating sparse arrangements that showcase each instrument distinctly (including his voice). Literally they're the same DNA, missing bassline and all. I'd be more curious what people think is dissimilar about them.

Look man I lack the musical vocabularly/nomenclature to perhaps properly dilineate,

but WDC synth is like waewoowaewoowaewaowaewaoo all constant like a flutter. It's a lil squeeky. It's like a treadmill, it keeps going.

whereas "It" is more waew...woo... waeew..wwooo..wae..woo. More spacing. More tension. It's a completely different vibe. It's like tip-toeing in the middle of the night.

Drum wise they're even more distinct. "It" pattern is straight forward, direct and electro. Like anyone with a loop program could make a beat like that. WDC is more stuttered and you'd kind of have to have a better sense of rhythm/timing to properly pull it off on your own, and that's before you smother it in guitar effects which would require yet another layer of understanding/ability.

And most of his 80s stuff has the bassline reduced or omitted completely, even when it's there the basslines themselves are always lowest in the mix in the 80s. Miles Davis talked about it.

Now if you're just talking arrangement and choice of instruments... then my mom is correct, they're all the same, in the 80s anyway.

Bruv. It's synths go "weeeeewooowooowooweeeee" constantly thru the song with the Oberheim going BWEEMP BWEE-WEE-WEE-WEEEMP in stabs akin to the calliope sounding thing in WDC.

They're the same fucking song!!!!! And a baseline being low in the mix doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Prince has some famous baselines. Most of his songs DI have baselines, that's one reason why WDC, Kiss, and It stand out.

Don't play me.

Edit: Autocorrect got me on bassline.

7souls

Melody Cool sounds similar to Act Of God to me
Ancient Egyptians postulated 7 souls.
Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the secret name...

I'd always thought Cloreen Baconskin and Tricky were literally the same song, with Tricky being an excerpt / edited version. I was surprised when I read on PV they were recorded seperately.
