It still bothers me that they canceled D&P SDE when it obviously was ready for a release. That means there won't be an Parade SDE either with the new estate.

Source?

Last year Sharon Nelson said that SDE cost to much to produce and anything previously announced is now off the table which means there won't be any more SDE. https://prince.org/msg/7/...?&pg=2

I'm still waiting for an actual source on this instead of someone's fourth hand knowledge. You know very well that the prince community is full of that shit and it's so tired.

see, this is the thing that really angers me."Too much to produce"?? How come this isn't an issue for all the other artists and bands who have numerous SDEs being released every year or so?! confuse the SOTT SDE was kinda expensive so I refuse to believe that they didn't make a profit from it.

To be honest are SDE's really profitable for the estate. How many copies did SOTT sell ?

The thought that they are too expensive to produce is a fallacy. There is a market for the music. They printed only 13,000 copies of The Truth. These things are not expensive for them to make because the most expensive aspect was already paid for: producing the music.

Is there an actual official quote from her on that? Because the estate won't be paying for production costs, the label will.

Not sure how many they sold but just checked on the Prince store site and they have 144 available to buy of the Sign O’ The Times super deluxe vinyl edition and at least 999 of the CD version (999 is the most you can put in when trying to order). So perhaps they (the label and/or the estate) think they over produced and don’t want to get caught out again.
There may or may not be something coming!

Charles F Spicer on twitter stated, “Sounds like you have been misinformed about 2 projects being worked on or finished. It is suggested to know the facts before distorting them as you please. Here is a fact for you 2+0+2+3= Big 💜Year! #nodistortion”.

https://twitter.com/Charl...ap-fwsAAAA

I do seem to remember hearing about Sharon saying things were off the table back in August but haven’t found the quote yet, so it could be baloney or taken down. If I find anything else I’ll post it.

Personally I’m disappointed there’s no RSD release but perhaps the estate wants to handle their own and separate big announcements, so they’re not diluted (or they ain’t got anything to give). Time will tell.

The thought that they are too expensive to produce is a fallacy. There is a market for the music. They printed only 13,000 copies of The Truth. These things are not expensive for them to make because the most expensive aspect was already paid for: producing the music.

Vinyl Record Life site sets the average for just a simple black wax pressing two sided vinyl at 12.25 per but pressing plants will not do less than 100, so doing the math its 1225 dollars per 100 on average. HOWEVER this does not take into account, artwork on sleeves, this is plain white label, also artwork on the labels on the vinyl, double albums or gatefolds see a rise in price also colored vinyl is another rise in the price which is normally a thing for most artists on RSD or even bands/artists when they do things on their own sites they tend to release a bunch of different colors but very limited in QTY usually sometimes 500 at best just because of the cost. So if you are doing simple black wax white sleeve no gatefolds and artworks you can probably get it done for 12-13 dollars a record, add in artwork and gatefolds, and colored vinyl etc...I would guess somewhere in the 20-25 range but that is a guess it all depends on the pressing plant doing this, and this is not even factoring in double and triple vinyl and so on sets.

This is a good theory.

They clearly under produced for 1999 Deluxe and left ca$h on the table as a result, so they probably went the other extreme and now have warehouses full of those creepy disappearing Marty McFly-esque SOTT SDE cases.

Now we have to suffer the consequences of the Estate's nickel and diming as a result. Gee if only there were a model or template for subscription-based services, oh let's say hmm, maybe billed once a month, let's say utilized by a bazillion rights holders as a means to generate regular, routine income on a set basis so said rights holder doesn't have to sit around worrying about sheckles and breadcrumbs any time they want to put out a half-baked product... Nah let's just put all our energies into guestimating the exact number of physical copies necessary to maximize supply/profit margins instead.

Well it's clearly an issue for the estate for some reason. Maybe they should only focus on digital releases from now on.

Most of the old-school fans don't mind either.

Digital releases (or a subscription service, since these chumps are apparently living paycheck to paycheck) then like some print-on-demand format where they take x-number of preorders would be the best format. Charge extra, limited pressing blahblah.

"Macho Man" Randy Savage's GOAT-level rap album is finally getting a vinyl pressing for Record Store Day. Clearly some of these record labels know how to give the people want they want, why is it so difficult for the Estate.

And at least Randy Savage's record label has the got'dam decency to not insist everything being stupid purple vinyl every go round like--ohmynothisispurpletoo, ugh scratch this last comment.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case and maybe a PR SDE in 2024. There might only be reissues this year but I hope I'm wrong. The fact that there aren't any RSD release isn't a good sign.

I seriously love Savage's song Be A Man. Not in an ironic way. It's great. Growing up my two idols were the Macho Man and Prince. I had a poster of each hanging above my bed.
