🍑 Elton John & Prince

So, Fenwick is a huge Elton John fan. He's encouraged me to listen to Elton's discography, one by one, which I am.

Recently I listened to Victim of Love, Elton's "hands-off" disco album. He didn't write any music on it, and Taupin didn't write any lyrics. He just came in, sang, and left. Didn't even tour for it. The album is the shortest in his catalog.

It opens with an 8-minute (read: too long) cover of "Johnny B. Goode." But as I'm listening to it, I noticed something quite familiar.

Here's the first clearer instance of a particular hook in the song, at the 3:42 mark.

In case you missed it, here's where it lands in Prince's world. 🍑

I don't know how common that hook is, but it just seemed rather glaring when I heard it. Not saying anyone stole from anyone else. It's just... there.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

It's pretty common.
Earth Wind and Fire and Ohio Players used in live jams. I even heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers use it in a live show during a jam before Prince came out with Peach.

Some years ago someone on here posted a ancient (50s or so ) blues track that seemed more like the basis of Peach including this hook. I can't remember who or what the track was but it ws interesting.

And I'm def not a blues person. Never got into it, but I sorta suspected that maybe it was a common hook somewhere. I"d just never heard it anywhere else (to my knowledge) until Elton's take.
