Radiohead Was Inspired by Prince, but They Called Him a Creep

In 2008, at Coachella, Prince covered Radiohead’s hit “Creep.” In typical Prince fashion, he repeatedly “yanked” fan-recorded videos of the moment off of YouTube. Yorke, who actually has the authority to remove the videos, did not respond to Prince’s “yanking” in solidarity.

“Really? He’s blocked it? Surely, we should block it. Hang on a moment…well, tell him to unblock it. It’s our…song,” Yorke told Billboard in 2008. He originally heard of Prince’s cover over a text message from a friend and thought it was “hilarious.”

The fact that Radiohead wanted Prince’s rendition of “Creep” unblocked is a bit hypocritical, given their own views of YouTube and the internet. However, what made the band so upset was that Prince made a decision about a song that wasn’t his, undermining Radiohead’s authority over their own music.

This article is bonkers. It's Prince blocking HIS PERFORMANCE and it doesn't matter what the damn song is.

Maybe? But if YouTube tags it as Radiohead having ownership of the song, and they are denied profits because of that, then Prince is the hypocrite here.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

In an interview with NME, radiohead frontman Thom Yorke was asked about his thoughts on the late musican Prince. Yorke said that he was "a massive fan" of Prince and that his death was "a huge shock." He went on to to say that Prince was "an incredible artist" and "a true pioneer."

Who is making profits here? Neither P not Radiohead would've made profits off just some other people posting YouTubes of his live show.

Prince cant be annoyed at another artist exercising rights over their song

This is what he was always doing!

His creep cover was pretty middle of the road though, it has to be said. Or maybe i only heard it in bad quality.

Radiohead's house of cards has a certain prince influence i think.

Wrong. (Legally) you can't seprate one from the other.

If ownership of the song was tagged by YouTube, then those click and view pennies would've gone to the songwriter. I've seen the smallest moments have a copyright tag on it by YT.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

You're missing the point.

It is illegal to record an artists live performance. That is copyright law. It does not matter if they wrote the song or not. The song itself being copyrighted material is a SEPARATE BUT EQUAL issue.

Someone else can't just post a video of you, make money off it, and say "well the writer of the song said it was ok."

ETA: Unless what you're really suggesting is that the YT authorities didn't know Prince didn't write Creep. And when they take down Just My Imagination, Soul Sacrifice, Pass the Peas, None Of Your Business, Skin Tight, etc it's because they assume Prince wrote those songs when he did not.

Woahh...slow down! Yes, it was pretty middle of the road, until, around 7 minutes in when he unleased one of his greatest live guitar solos of all bloody time! That was off the hook!!!

Wrong. Legally they constantly recognise separate rights between words, music, samples, recordings, performances, performers, venues, distributors etc.

That's exactly right. Either party, Prince or Radiohead, could have requested the video be blocked on YT. Prince on the basis of owning the rights to the live performance. Radiohead on the basis of owning the copyright to the song itself.

Yeah, it's bland.

To me the mark of a true member of the Purple Cult is when you start ranking his by-the-numbers phoned in generic cover versions as superior to the well-known originals. Like when org'ers try to claim his "Betcha by Golly Wow" or "La-la Means I Love You" are the definitive versions...
