girl (1985 america b-side) completely underrated cut. fucking psychotic track. don't even bother with the 7" edit, this has to be experienced in full. that spoken word over that just insane mind bending wonderland thwompy instrumental backing is like so off the wall bizarre it's incredible. I do love it, it's always been one of my favorites. I really want to hear his vocals on Boy, though.

The first B side I heard. Love it. I would like to hear the 1982 "boy" version. Something BIG Is Coming.

I had a massive crush on a girl around the time I got the America 12” in the mid 80’s and this song always reminds me of her. As the lust was unrequited, for many years with a touch of sorrow but now I laugh at myself for being lame, thinking she was the one. That 12” needs a remaster. There may or may not be something coming!

you should've told her that all you needed to do was think about her to have an orgasm

"How can U resist me?
Interesting how he references "animal lust' as well in his autobiography. It must have made a big impression on him. That song is probably about that same girl. Marci I believe her name was.

A boring and uneventful song.

Yeah, it has always been a favourite of mine too. It has that strange, dark and as you say, slightly “deranged” quality that I love in Prince’s more edgy and experimental stuff. I’ve always had the impression that it was quite a divisive track though – it has come up in discussions of Prince's worst songs, which is completely beyond me! It is a torpid and “uneventful” track in a way, but it's precisely this hypnotic, dreamlike quality that I like. I think it's brilliant. [Edited 1/12/23 9:17am]

After the lyric "your ass is so tight", he starts eating it.

The song that was the B-side of "America"?...*yawn*...it sounds empty and unfinished...prince begging and yodeling and playing silly synth-lines that sound almost off-key... "All i have to do us think about you and i have an orgasm...*corny*..." "Im a good kisser, too...*eye-roll*.." I dont get the hype about this song, apparently neither did Prince.

love this song...it's a light, quirky little track but I actually like it more than most of the songs on ATWIAD.

I think it's pretty great in the way the sparse drum track just sort of drones on yet when you listen

Have to agree on the good kisser line. . It probably belonged in the recent cringe thread. I don’t really mind the edit but struggle with the extended/full version.

Now see, I don't disagree that the lyrics are corny. They are, I can admit it. But I also kinda see them as so perfectly like the way he was at that time. Over the top, weird, kinda corny sometimes, a sense of humor, and all that. I think this is very different to the corny stuff you hear later in his career when he took himself much more seriously. It's kind of a trippy little exploration in the same vein as Bambi, Sister, Annie Christian, Tambourine. Experimental and off kilter and tongue in cheek. It's like distilled 84 prince in a bottle.

It is certainly a really weird choice given he had fully stacked songs just sitting around doing nothing that I reckon he would've performed live more times (songs like the JJ stuff especially).

I don't like the song either. The lyrics are "interesting" and young . I'm going to assume that he wrote them when he was under 21, even though the song was released in 85. [Edited 1/12/23 11:59am]
