Frustrated like it's 1999

Get frustrated !

Isn't this the sadest of all Prince years yet? ... concerning releases or any news?

No party like it's 1999 here for me, and I guess i'm not alone.

Please, use this topic to get all your frustrations out, but don't bash orgers.

-

I hope those in charge are reading all our frustrations.

Fuck and forget 2022!

I’m confident “those in charge” are not reading the Org.

Do you people not have better things to do? Constantly whining about this subject isn't going to speed things up. You'll get new product eventually, and if not then you'll just have to get a grip and get over it.

Self entitled like it's 1999.

Considering the fact that I personally came across the SDE's this year only because I was so busy with life these past couple of years, I ain't complaining.

Let's wait to see what Sharon Nelson (who seems to be in charge, illogically) says during her "private party" at Paisley on NYE.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

SDE’s Biggest Disappoin...uxeEdition

Prince studio album reissues… Or lack of them

Money Don’t Matter 2 Night, because there’s nothing to spend it on. After decades of zero reissue activity, it finally felt as if things were changing and there was some momentum in the Prince camp with the superb reissues of 1999 and Sign ‘O’ The Times in 2019 and 2020, respectively. We can give the estate and the record label the benefit of the doubt with regards to the lack of action in 2021, due to the ongoing issues around COVID with related supply-chain issues – and the already problematic lead time for vinyl production – but this year also came and went without any sign of the much-rumoured Diamonds and Pearls / ‘Symbol’ album reissue. It’s now been well over two years since we enjoyed that spectacular Sign ‘O’ The Times reissue and the only aspect which has eased the pain a little bit is Sony’s activity with the material that they have the rights to. The ‘lost’ Welcome 2 America album put out in 2021 was much better than anyone could have expected, even if the box set was somewhat overblown and ludicrously overpriced in the UK. Likewise, the Prince and the Revolution Live release from this year was also decent, even if the audio was more impressive than the visuals.

Like most members, they grew bored of the site and rarely visit.

I doubt the Org will every be as popular as it once was (with Prince's passing and with newer forms of fan community engagment having emeraged). But with that said, next time there's an a major announcement (such as a new SDE, a streaming service, or whatever), I'm sure traffic will pick up again... at least temporarily.

I guess the main appeal of the org was knowing that Prince was reading it.

I've only been coming around this place since 2016 but it feels like traffic has dropped off hard in the last year. Guess that's what happens when the estate fucks around instead of releasing new material consistently.

It does appear that new releases are a big reason people come on here - at least for a period of time. Hopefully we'll be getting something in 2023...maybe even a couple releases - Have to generate some Prince fan excitement! Whatever happens, I also hope some old orgers eventually return back here, as well as having new people sign up.

Actually, I need to dig out my CD collection-could have made a fortune after P passed...but I couldn't part with it. Now, I need more space. The MJ collection has to go, too. I hope these will go to people who care about them.

2022 – The year of the re-issue.

2022 was an exceedingly disappointing year for Prince releases. That isn’t to say that the year was completely without merit.

Like 2021, I think this year (well, last year technically) demonstrated what could potentially be achieved with future releases. I personally wasn’t keen on the album ‘Welcome 2 America’, but I really appreciated the fact that unreleased Prince albums (as Prince had originally titled and sequenced them… allegedly!) were on the table. It’s opened the door for albums such as the original ‘Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic’, ‘The Dawn’ (96/97), and ‘Madrid 2 Chicago’.

For me, the two most exciting examples of this kind of potential this year were…

1) Newly mixed remasters of previously broadcast live shows.

Personally, I’m really disappointed with what has happened with ‘Syracuse ‘85’ since Prince’s passing. This is an iconic Purple Rain live show which damn near all Prince fans have had the opportunity to marvel at during some point during our lives.

The fact that it has been newly mixed and made available in a variety of beautifully packaged formats is something that should have been universally celebrated under normal circumstances. Unfortunately, this release was sullied by the fact that it was it’s third outing six years.

Had the show not already been included with the Purple Rain Deluxe 4 disc set, and then released a second time as a digital audio album three years later, I’m sure it would have been far better received by the fanbase.

Sadly, I have feeling that the frosty reception ‘Syracuse ‘85’ received this year will likely be echoed with the inevitable Purple Rain 40th Anniversary box set that we’ll likely receive in 2024. Despite the fact that the previous deluxe edition lacked a lot to be desired (the complaints around the remastering, the audio error on the B-Sides disc, the lack of a First Avenue ‘83 show and it’s much more superior version of ‘Electric Intercourse’), there is still going to be a portion of the fanbase that will be vocal in their destain for returning to the Purple Rain era so soon. Had the original Purple Rain deluxe been put together with better care and attention then all of this could have been avoided. The same can be said of Syracuse ‘85. Had this years release been the first and only time Syracuse had been reissued in recent years, I doubt anyone would have complained.

Having said that, imagine Sony Legacy giving the same treatment to other previously broadcast shows? A newly mixed Cobo Arena, Detroit 1986? Nude Tour, Dome Tokyo 1990? Or the one I'm personally aching for, a fully restored Lovesexy Dortmund 1988? I wouldn’t turn any of these down.

2) The clearance of ‘The Most Beautiful Girl In The World’.

I’m guessing that a lot of fans have been quick to forget about the hole that this had left in Prince’s discography for such a long time. The fact that ‘The Gold Experience’ was either incomplete or completely omitted from streaming services. The fact that such an important album had been out of print for such a long time, or that future greatest hits packages would have been forced to omit a single that went to #1 in the UK.

The biggest door that has opened for us is that a 1993 - 1994 expanded box set is now back on the table. Whether it be an expanded Gold Experience, a combined Gold Experience / Come box set, or just a studio sessions set covering these years. I’m confident that Sony Legacy wouldn’t have had any intention of covering this era until the biggest single associated with it was clear to re-release, and now it is. For me, this is huge.

So, for me, 2022 demonstrated a lot of potential, but it means nothing if the estate isn’t willing to capitalise on it. I think the biggest disappointment was that this (by my count) was only the second year since Prince’s debut that didn’t see the release of a single studio recording.

If you list out all the years between 1978 and 2022, and then scratch through all the ones when Prince released an original studio album, (or a year when the estate released an expanded album with previously unreleased songs), then you are left with…

1983: Which saw the release of two B-sides (Horny Toad and Irresistible Bitch)
1993: Which saw the release of The Hit / B-Sides, with it’s exclusive tracks and singles.
1997: A very dry year, but did include the mail order release of Kamasutra, plus a few remixes of Somebody’s Somebody. (Bit of a barrel scraper, I will admit.)
2000: One Song, Cybersingle, U Make My Sunshine and When Will We B Paid
2005: Would have been a no show had it not been for the ‘Te Amo Corazón’ single
2011: Extraloveable single release
2012: Rock And Roll Love Affair
2013: Screwdriver, Fixurlifeup, Breakfast Can Wait & other downloads.

2016: Moonbeam Lever on 4ever
2018: The original demo of Nothing Compares 2 U

That leaves only 2008 (the year that the Indigo Nights live album and book were released), and 2022 (the year when a live Diamonds and Pearls 7” was given away at Celebration and Syracuse was re-released… again!)

In summary, yes, 2022 was a wash out!

At the end of the day, despite the estate dragging their feet let's not forget that Sony and Warners want to capitalise on their investment so if Sharon and co don't get a move on soon then I can see the estate starting to face legal issues from the music companies.

with the unreleased, unheard B-side live version of 'Cool' ?

I think the change from the Estate/Comerica to the heirs/Primary Wave running things since August last year (2022) shouldn’t be underestimated. In terms of management and strategic planning (if there is to be such a long term thing), these things take time, especially if the philosophy of the new people, is vastly different to those before. Remember after Prince’s passing, it took 7 months for any sort of release, which was the 4Ever compilation. Then the next year, the Purple Rain Deluxe (that we all No wasn’t without its issues) was released in June 2017, 14 months after he died. The next releases were the digital Anthology one and the 1983 Piano & Microphone, in the August and September, 2 years after.

@VaultCurator ideas for remastered live shows, such as the Lovesexy tour one, would follow nicely after last year’s Syracuse - I welcomed that audio being on a physical release, but agree it could have been better handled on the Purple Rain Deluxe. Who knows if the new structure will take any of the templates the Estate had. We may just get more merchandise, or the interactive experience that was done in Chicago expanding to other cities/countries in 2023. Until an official announcement of new vault recordings, if there is to be one, then we’ll just have to learn to be patient, and find other things to discuss.
There may or may not be something coming!
