Liner notes written by Prince Prince actually wrote a lot of liner notes & virtual liner notes on his websites. Has anyone made a complete catalogue for this? Like especially if it was in order of release. He wrote a lot of great stuff like how Poom Poom wasn’t really intended for any album but just to get girls laughing. I remember for Jam of the year it said something about it was to be played @ high decibels during the summer of 1997. [Edited 1/2/23 21:05pm]

He wrote the liner notes for the Hits/B-Side and Cyrstal Ball, right? Those are the only ones I know off the top of my head.

He did not write the liner notes for The Hits. Prince was paid to vacate the process for The Hits beyond the photoshoot. |

It's true that he was paid to stay away from the Hits, but I'm pretty confident I read somewhere that he did contribute the liner notes. If I recall correctly, officially the liner notes are attributed to Alan Leeds, but Alan has said that he used a lot of stuff Prince gave him.
UPDATE #1: I found Alan's comments in a Facebook post:
"Interesting - I'd never seen this before and wasn't aware P had posted these comments. For the record, I had volunteered to Warner Bros. to help assemble and sequence the 3 CDs. However, they were stuck on "their" sequence - I never knew for sure if Prince liked or was involved in the sequencing. I believe it was put together by WB'sr in-house catalogue maven, my friend Gregg Geller and I doubt he had much dialogue with Prince. However, Prince did call me to write the notes. I told him it was an honor but only if he'd answer a few questions so I could add some background that wasn't common knowledge among fans. He agreed but asked me not to write like an interview. So I simply incorporated some of his "revelations" into my notes. When I sent him the finished notes, he called to say "thanks, nice job" and that was it. He surprisingly did zero editing."

UPDATE #2: If I'm understanding correctly, here are Prince's originial liner notes that Alan edited / revised / based his submission on:

[Edited 1/3/23 10:11am] Cool reads! I'd still suggest Alan wrote the notes, but he clearly got lots of inspiration from Prince's anecdotes. Of course, the liner notes involve more than these blurbs. Btw, in what universe does When Doves Cry have a xylophone? Am I missing something, like ears? |
