Trash list. All conjecture. The org is more empirical.

During the 2001 Celebration he told us how he when he was a kid he was obsessed with Jimmy Nolen, Eddie Hazel, Freddy Stone, Ernie Isley and Santana. No Hendrix mentioned then.

anyone who saw him on the 3EG tour could see he had been studying hendrix.

Excactly ! Hendrix and Prince... more compared because of their appearances. Their guitar styles were completely different. Yes Prince covered songs by Hendrix, but that's about it, and doesn't mean shit. Prince never played like Hendrix and vice versa.

Influence does not mean 'he sounded just like him. '

prince was shrewd though - you know he didnt want to be too compared with the most famous black guitarist of all time.
so he was clever in trying to avoid that. BUT, its clear he was a hendrix fan, and id wager that he studied hendrix more as he got older. how much he actually sounds like him though, i am not that sure, but hes in there *somewhere*, even if i think on the whole prince has a cleaner tone, and plays with much more control.

The org is not empirical. They built their list using quotes from Prince. THAT is empirical. Prince loved P-Funk, but that doesn’t mean he thought every musician involved was great. They weren’t. He may have loved Eddie Hazel, but it’s not empirical unless Prince himself said so.

funny how no one objects to joni mitchell being listed in this. i mean there are more examples of him playing more like hendrix than her. and yet mention hendrix and everyones like 'but he said he didnt sound like him!' artists arent always the most objective on their own stuff. and they often have their own take on how they play. and i doubt prince would wanna be compared to hendrix as thats a big beast to take on, and it would also mean he doesnt sound like himself, which he would also not want to happen. but there is absolutely no way that hendrix wasnt an influence or a favourite. maybe not top ten favourite, but id be surprised if he wasnt - prince loved to play rock guitar after all and he would have been of the right age to be exposed to hendrix right around or just after the time he was really blowing up. plus, if he likes ernie isley, hazel, michael hampton etc, youre telling me hendrix wasnt their big influence, and that prince didnt know that? cmon. he could have said, 'oh i sound more like eddie hazel, santana, curtis mayfield, ernie isley' but he didnt, he just denied hendrix was that big of a deal for him, and bigged up santana. i think the real reason he didnt talk about hendrix that much is as he said once, hendrix played brilliantly and like only he could, and it would be wrong to try and sound like that. it was a respect thing. but there was an article once where a journalist visited PP and what was on the cd player? are you experienced! Any list that doesn't have Jeff Beck is worthless! "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee
