Harry Styles on Prince

https://www.vogue.de/kult...-interview

9. His musical heroes were role models for his flamboyant stage style

"The people I've looked up to in music - Prince and David Bowie and Elvis and Freddie Mercury and Elton John - they're such showmen. As a kid, it was completely overwhelming. Now when I put on something really extravagant, it doesn't feel crazy. I think when you have something that you feel incredible in, it's like a superhero outfit."

Didn't he have a song titled "Sign of the times" after Prince ?

I'm sure it was him.

I'd be curious to know how many Prince songs he actually knows. Not just him but a lot of modern "artists" who claim to be influenced by the likes of Prince and David Bowie but never seem to talk about their music and instead say things like "he was a great showman" or "he wore such nice clothes".

I bet they are at least into the hits.

I ain't ever heard Lady Gaga talk about Bowie or Queen deep tracks but she says they are her top influences along with others I've never heard her mention deep cuts for. lol. My kingdom for somebody to say Width of a Circle is their favorite Bowie song.

Dua Lipa's latest album was inspired by Prince, she said that she "had been listening to a lot of Prince" so I'm assuming at least his 80's work.

I don't hear any similarities to be honest. And I like Dua Lipa but I'd hardly call her an "artist" anyway. She has very little input in how her music sounds seeing as she doesn't write any of it. Maybe her team of producers were listening to a lot of Prince?

She certainly claims to be involved in the writing of her songs, and takes a co-writing credit. No idea how much input she has.

She has just as many writing credits on her albums as Beyonce does. Take that as you will.

Songwriting credits are a disaster and while Prince didn't start that trend he definitely abused it.

Maybe it wasn't her "latest' album per say, my bad, the article came out in 2018

Here it is

https://www.nme.com/news/music/dua-lipa-discusses-prince-outkast-inspired-new-album-2328572

"The singer said of her new album’s direction: “It has throwback elements, too. I’ve been listening to a lot of Outkast and Prince and things sonically I’m such a fan off so I’m just trying to take that and put it together with pop.”"

I have both of her albums. One was released in 2017 and the other was released in 2020. Neither sounds anything remotely like any of the Prince songs I've heard. But there's a whole heap of unreleased Prince music I haven't heard so maybe she's talking about that. I doubt it. But maybe.

Maybe they were inspired in various ways.

Wasn't Prince inspired by the success of "Thriller" in creating "Purple Rain", and they sound nothing alike.

Same thing with U2's "Achtung Baby" being inspired by Def Leapard's "Hysteria". Sounds nothing like it.

I haven't heard Dua Lipa's albums so I can't speak on it.

I will say that Justin Timberlake's "Justified" album was definitely inspired by Prince.

Justified was inspired by MJ. Half those songs were rejects from Invincible.

FutureSex/LoveSounds is the Prince joint.

I can hear the Prince influence on FutureSex/Lovesounds. To my ears, it almost sounds like a knock off of 3121. I can't be arsed looking it up to see which came first but when I first heard 3121 I immediately thought of FS/LS. I don't hear any Prince on Justified though. Though admittedly, I'm not a very "musical" person so I may well be missing some subtle references and whatnot.

Was Purple Rain inspired by Thriller? Never knew that. For some reason I thought they were released around the same time.
