Another Lonely Christmas

Yeah I know, topic #whatever about this song but still…. Just listened to the long version and goose bumps allover again. What a great song this is, especially in this time of the year. Great story telling in this song.

Given the slow down in releases from the Estate this year, this would have been a nice end of year release to keep us warm (pun intended). Why not release a 7’ single (not limited as we all know what limited means for the Estate) backed with the one time live performance from 26/12/84? Seems another missed opportunity to me.

I love this song.

One time back in the mid-80s I played this song and some non-Prince fans overheard. They thought it was Elvis. When they told them it was Prince they didn't believe me. They accepted they were wrong about it being Elvis, but they couldn't cmoprehend Prince making this genre of music. They thought he would just make music like 1999 and Kiss.

I love this one - especially the heavy reverb he used. It's like he's crying it out into a cold, still Minnesota night, hoping she'll hear it in heaven.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

They could release single box sets of 7inch and 12 inch singles. Do them in volumes maybe.
Most of my 7 inch single covers have disintegrated
over the years.

I have to tell you - when I first heard it, I wasn't impressed. I thought - what the ever-living fuck is this shit?!?! I wasn't even that thrilled with the 12" of "I Would Die 4 U." I was more enthralled with the larger record label on it than the music it held.

But both grew on me. I sorta think about it being in the vein of "God (Instrumental)." Very unique, echoey, weird ass songs. "God" ends up going weird at the end, like ALC does. Lotta odd drum fills and going off course, it seems. But ALC still regroups and brings it to a great ending. The extended version (which is likely the full original cut) is an orgy of sounds and hitting every button on the console.

It's definitely a Princemas song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I love the song as well.

Since it's a Christmas song, I wonder how he spent Christmas, did he celebrate it before he became a JW ?

The only live version (not rehearsals) gives me goose bumps. Glad that the boot is in good quality.

Such a fan-tas-tic track.

Prince pooring his heart out... love the lyrics.

Play it every year in my Xmas playlist.

He was raised Seventh Day Adventist.

Seventh-day Adventists do not find instruction in the Bible to celebrate either Christmas or Easter as distinct holy days. Believers are free to celebrate Christmas and Easter if they choose, and many do. But the church does not feel obliged to recognize those days.

One SDA pastor said, "As a church, we don’t have an official statement or position about celebrating Christmas, leaving it instead to the individual. We must be careful not to allow the subject of Christmas to become a divisive issue among us, criticizing or alienating those who may see it differently than we ourselves do."

I remember Susan Rogers saying they were recording around the holiday once. There were gifts under a tree from people, but he "didn't seem very interested in them."

Knowing him, he probably just did what he'd do on any other day. The tour etc were on hold during those times, but he was likely home doing his own thing. But maybe he spent one here or there with Wendy & Lisa, or his parents, or someone.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I thought it was "your mother said it was strep," not "stress."

I've always thought stress, especially because it rhymes.
