the best version of PR is the 20 min live one anyway

the album version is kinda dull tbh

plus i dont think its produced that well either.

better to hear it stretched out for 19-20 mins

you get to bathe in its majesty that way

Uh huh. Well not everyone's tryna take a bath every time they wanna hear that sweet sweet guitar crying out.

You could say that about any of his movies.

And I could argue they're not essential simply because they're movies and he's a music-man, not Martin Scorsese. If Tarantino had a rock band it wouldn't be essential compared to his films, as a counterpoint.

UTCM sounds intriguing though. I'm closer to wanting to watch the last two more than ever, but I'm still gonna argue that want is completely inessential... especially compared to more boots, more live shows, more books... those are definitely more essential.

.
Essential or not, it’s actually shocking to me to hear a fan say they’ve been avoiding watching those movies.
.
It took me a long time to get into Under the Cherry Moon. I think bought into the party-line sentiment that it was “bad.” That’s such a problems with fandom of any kind. So much groupthink. It’s a very funny movie with some good performances, including by Prince. I’ve even managed to convince some non-fans to watch it and some got some enjoyment out it just as a romantic comedy.
.
Graffiti Bridge, it’s a bad movie. But again, it’s 90 minutes of Prince trying to wear too many hats, tackling an ambitious project that he desperately needed help with — all that said, as a fan, why not just watch it? There are much worse ways to spend 90 minutes when watching a crappy movie.
I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

i confess, i still have not read the beautiful ones.

i had it, but then just didnt want to read it as it was unfinished.

i will read it one day.

i like the fact theres still something of his i have not gone through though.

.
I haven’t read it. Deliberate choice. It wasn’t finished, so I never had the slightest interest in it.
.
Edit: I think this is an interesting topic of discussion. But I also think the parameters of what “essential” means are difficult to define.

cantstop

I have some unopened books, still in plastic. I’ve yet to watch some blue ray stuff, listen to some of the super deluxe content I have, and a few dvds of live performances.
I’m not sure what the hold up is. I think after being a fan for nearly 40 years, I’ve become P complacent.
When I’m in the mood I’ll put something on shuffle. Maybe I’m holding onto those because they’ll always be “new”.
