I just sent an email to the merchandizing arm of the Estate. I realize there's a 100% chance my message ends up in the trash with no one of any importance reading it, let alone being influenced by it, but it made me feel good to vent. Here's what I wrote:

"I'm providing general feedback on your inventory; I don't have a question about a specific order. I realize the person receiving this message is not likely in a position to address my concerns, but I would appreciate it if you would forward this on to the decision makers who are responsible for developing Prince related merchandise.

"I have zero interest in Prince-related apparel, home goods and tchotchkes.

"But what I am interest in -- i.e. what I'd be more than happy to fork over copious amounts of money to purchase -- is new music.

"Note the qualifier "new" in my previous sentence. I do not want or need yet another copy of the song Purple Rain or another hit that has already been released numerous times on its original album, as a single or in a greatest hits collection. The fact that you might press it on colorful vinyl, stamp it with a limited edition number or package it with tchotchkes doesn't make it any more desirable. The value of music comes from listening to it, not from admiring it in a gimmick / novelty format.

"Please, for the love of God, make available previously unreleased music from Prince's legendary vault. I'd happily give you my money.

"If that's not a possibility and you're limited to reissuing music from his existing catalogue, you could at least remaster it to add value and give consumers a reason to purchase it.

"Of course you may have marketing data tells a different story, but from my anecdotal experiences within the Prince fan community, the products you offer sale are by and large ridiculed, not lauded. We don't want bath robes; we want super deluxe box sets."

well, in a perfect world we would have had a Parade SDE and a Diamonds & Pearls SDE
