Prince interviewed on Howard Stern… would it have ever happened?

After listening to the recent interview that Howard did with Bruce Springsteen, I wondered if P might’ve eventually done one with him? Howard often praises P and seems to love his music.

We'll never know, and clearly he wasn't interested while he was still alive.

Would have been pointless as he wouldn't have answered any of the "spicy" questions Howard Stern likes to ask his guests.

These days Stern doesn't probe interviewees's sex lives as much and is generally kinder to people (which kind of makes him boring). He's really into music and had a lot of respect for Prince, so I'd assume the interview would focus on the actual music.

I'd agree. Stern has blanded himself down into nothingness. Long gone are his days of the shock-jock moniker. He defends the producer and production head who did this to/with him. I started to read his last book with all the interviews, but I was bored out of my fucking mind. I didn't get forty pages in before I put it down.

Stern's days of being even remotely interesting are over.

I'll always love Howard! He's a legend. Mature Prince and Mature Howard are good things and I'd like to see them chat. However, I think Howard does ask driving questions that would still put Prince off potentially. He'd definitely have to stay away from prince's religion and conspiracies.

Good to know he's changed. I've hated Howard Stern for years because I thought he was so rude. He's attacked some other artists that I like so I've always held some kind of grudge.

I wonder if and how many times the show tried to contact him for a interview? Maybe that’s a call in question, if one could ever get through. The caliber of music artists Howard has had on recently made me think of Prince. Even though I really can’t see him opening up in that format. But definitely could see him playing songs and let the music do the talking.

And then Stern would've berated him without Prince there to defend himself. Called him an imp, a prissy bitch or whatever. Robin would've cackled along, and he would've milked it for another hour's worth of show.

Yeah but you're distinctly referring to a Howard Stern that pretty much hasn't existed for the better part of 15 years or even more. He got even more soft after Robin got cancer or whatever it was. I don't think the Stern who published that interview book (which I loved btw, as a whole) would be making people walk off now or berating them off camera.

Off topic but my favorite Stern moments are with Richard Simmons exactly because Richard was in on the bit. Prince had a sense of humor all his own, though, and rarely played nice so I don't think he ever could've tolerated Stern even if it was all in fun.

We wish. Maybe in 1996. The Howard I stopped tuning into a decade ago would've had Robin abruptly start the news at 8:30 and then barrel out there before 9am, take six weeks of vacation and then ignore a caller asking "Hey Howid what happened two months ago with Prince?", ".......he's around."

Good on you giving that abominable new book of his a shot, though. The description alone is as vapid as the celebs he used to goof on... what's he publishing verbatim transcripts of his milquetoast 90-minute interviews now? He can't put out a CD? Blu-Ray? Why not release them on stone tablet? King of all media...

And I don't believe because Howard is different than the Howard who first showed up at Sirius way back when that he'd be any better now with Prince on his couch. Sure, they'd probably gush over him for a bit, but then - who knows what.

Also, all the lesbian/short people/special needs/whoever people and antics aside - Howard now, talking to someone acting like he's on PBS or NPR and attempting to ask a probing question just comes across as ....hmm, not fake. Just desperate, maybe? Inauthentic? I just roll my eyes when I hear him interview the way he does now.

Sure, I know a 68 year old man is not going to pull the same shenanigans as he did even a decade ago, much less fifteen years ago. But I can't figure out what he is trying to do now? Be a serious interviewer? Is he trying to Seth Meyer his way into being some relatable and trustworthy figure in media? I honestly have no idea.

I loved his newer show when it came to Sirius. Just about every day I'd find 3 hours to listen to that stuff. I never missed it. I was using newsgroups to download the HowardTV videos to watch, too. But now... I can't think the last time I listened to anything he did.

I'm glad he never got Prince in there. It would've been embarassing, IMO.

Richard SImmons was a great guest but MARK HARRIS was the ALL TIME GREATEST!

Omg I still crack up thinking about him and his failed TV shows, his Cabaret act and Martha!

I think it could have happened.

Howard is a HUGE Prince fan. His "eulogy" for Prince was just fantastic. Howard constantly sings the praises of the "Batman" album, which shows that he is a true fan. The only time I really heard him bash Prince was when he went to see a Prince show and P performed the show entirely in the dark.

My favorite thing to say when i'm posting and talking about Prince is "well MY theory is"....

It probably already happened I mean, you don't get to have an interview with Larry King and not be interested in interviews or people that do interviews or being on a show being interviewed.

I think he would have liked Howard Stone sorry I mean Howard Stern because Howard is a really good listener.

Yeah, Howard loves that friggin' Batman album like it's Sgt. Pepper's meets Songs in the Key of Life.

I used to think he was just a Purple Rain hits Prince fan, but one time some staffer or guest was trying to school Howard on his lack of music knowledge and he shot back, "C'mon, pick an album or artist I know, like Prince or his Batman album, I can tell you anything about that album, what do you want to know, 'The Future', 'The Electric Chair'" and he literally railed off every track in order. He knows that album better than I do. I had to check that he got it right. He started integrating album cut lyrics into conversation and everything.

He used to talk about dancing around in his apartment in his underwear before having sex with his girlfriend to Batman album, too.

I used to listen to every Stern show multiple times until the next new show aired. Probably every show from like 2001 to 2011, and a bunch prior at least once. This was probably after that so it's less 100%, probably from a YouTube clip or something.... Robin maybe said after Prince passed that she almost got him for a Howard Birthday Show, and Howard was like "wow, really! I would have loved that, seriously!?" and then she was like well he stopped taking returning our calls right away, "I think you said something about his conversion to Jehova's Witness on-air and we never heard from him again." Really want to believe that was the exchange...

Oh he's a pussycat now. What artists, MJ? He's apologized for that a million times. "You know Robin, maybe I was just too angry at everything then and he just wanted to make a friend..."

Thing is Howie was in the right about that situation. Maybe a little over-the-top venemous in his response, but it sounds like MJ just wanted to use Howard as propaganda to make MJ seem more accessible and down-to-earth without giving anything in return--which is what oddly enough would have actually made MJ seem less aloof and askew to the public, actually going in and giving a real, legit, open and honest interview where he at least responded to a couple of Howard's questions. He was never that bad when people actually showed up anyway, even in the 90s.

He was only really vicious toward MJ in his second book Miss America anyway. Now there was a book.

Lookin' for sum Howie quotes, found the eulogy. Here's some cliffs, editing around Howie still whining about Prince turning off the lights at a concert and mild shock jockery:

source: http://www.marksfriggin.c...-2.htm#mon

Remembering Prince. 05/02/16. 7:10am

Howard said Prince was the most talented artist. Howard said forget the guitar playing. He said forget he put out the best movie album too. Howard said the guy could dance like James Brown too. Howard said the guy could play guitar and dance and he could play every instrument. Howard said the idea that he's gone is like Steve Jobs dying.

Howard said he watched a few interviews that Prince did years ago. He said Larry King got to interview him and he was so jealous. Howard said he has tried most of his career to get him in the studio. Howard said he was unable to. Howard said maybe he was scared of him. Gary said the last time he tried to get Prince on the show was for his birthday show and his people said that he doesn't recognize birthdays because he's a Jehovah's Witness.

Howard said Purple Rain really blew him away. He said the movie and album really hit big with people. Howard said that did it for him too.

Howard said he loves Purple Rain so much. He played some of the song and said there's a thing on the internet when Prince performed the song for the first time in public. Howard said it's amazing. He said they've lost a great genius. Howard said he's like a Mozart of our time.

Howard said that Prince was asked to do two songs for the Batman movie. Howard said he was asked to do 2 songs for it but he came to them with a whole album. Howard said he thought it was cool that he incorporated scenes from the movie into his songs and no one was doing that. Howard said some people think it's his worst work but he thinks every song on that album rocks. Howard played a little bit of Bat Dance. Howard said he thinks it's great.

Howard said another famous clip is when he was at the Rock & Roll Hall of fame and Tom Petty got him up on stage. Howard played some of that where you can hear Prince playing guitar on ''While My Guitar Gently Weeps.''

Howard said the guy was such a talent. He said it was news to people that he was that great of a guitarist. Robin said if you watched him on stage you were shocked. She said he was dancing at the same time. Howard said rest in peace Prince and went to break.

Even with the lights issue Howie later apologized, something like, "look, maybe he wasnt in the mood for bright lights, fine, I just wanted to watch him play his guitar."

I like that Howard youtube'd the First Avenue PR debut though.

Shit, get Fink in there. Or Morris. Wendy & Lisa? He has millions of listeners and wether you like his current format or not, the guy can pull some info out of his guests like no other. Maybe that kind of attention would refresh estate activity or stimulate record sales. Push another release. Eh? Eh? Somebody call Fah Fah Foe Hi.

Actually that's a great idea because Howard is a fan and would ask questions that dispel the bs.

Kinda like how the Sunset Sound guys double and triple checked with Susan Rogers that P was the akle writer on the songs Apples claimed.

As an avid fan of both. Howard loves the Batman soundtrack, he considers it the greatest soundtrack ever. He goes crazy for Batdance, it's comical the praise he gives it. He has respect for Prince as a musician, but he has also been very critical of Prince's behavior/attitude at times.

It would only be a good interview if Prince was willing to not put up a front.

All I heard when I read that is those words in Elmo's voice.

Sorry. I had just read somebody's comment questioning something that I wrote and the energy passed over to this response. I'm about to address that in a second.

Howard Stern doesn't have the balls to interview anybody that posts on this website I can tell you that much. What makes me say that? Because I'm assuming that since I've only watched about 100 of his bits he doesn't know I'm alive. I am almost equally sure that if we post on this website, an interview with Howard Stern would be disqualifying. Or vice versa. Whatever.

And forgive me for sounding like a mean person to ask this, or to suggest this, but are you BLIND?

It would be good even if he did put up a front and modern Howard would probably be fine with that.

He's done marathon music revue type interviews with like Billy Joel for instance and he didn't really press about anything. Piano & Mic Tour era he probably would have let Prince just sit there and play song after song, using in-between banter to talk about writing the song or the song's meaning, that's typically Howard's segue into getting info out of guests now, wrapping it in compliments about the art...

Prince might have even had a good time, actually, He'd probably threaten to walk out a lot in the beginning after some light grazing of salacious topics/jokes but Howad would absolutely shower him with praises of what a genius he was, how incredible a musician he was, etc to get him to stay.. especially because he actually would mean it. Prince usually had a high tolerance for those kinda fans.

Plus, Howard loves minimalist versions of hits and live covers.
