Question about the NYE 87 concert at Paisley Park

You know the one where Miles Davis makes an appearance.

Before Prince started singing Purple Rain he was attempted to sing another song (not his) and told the audience that they knew the words. It seemed like he didn't know the lyrics. I'm trying to figure out if this was planned as he kind of looked like a deer in headlights but of course being Prince he tried to be cool about it. Were they experiencing technical difficulties or am I just reaching ?

It was New Years Eve. The song was Auld Lang Syne Traditionally sung on New Year's Eve.

He just didn't know the words, like most people he just knew a few of them.

It's a great concert. The version of Adore is my favourite Prince live moment ever. So glad to have the Dvd.

Seriously? You typed NYE without knowing what NYE means? You heard the partial song and didn't recognize it? You've never been anywhere on NYE where people sing that song?

That was NO "deer in the headlights", mister. That was him joking around doing something he didn't care much about.

Are you that desperate to talk to people that you have to pretend you're from the outer reaches of the universe?

I'm not American, they don't sing that song for NYE where I'm from. Is that a crime ?

The BIG question about the NYE 87 concert at Paisley Park is why hasn't it been released as a standalone CD or vinyl package? It's an amazing show.

I wish Miles Davis would have played longer.

When do the Revolution "miss their cue" during Miles' solo? Eric Leeds talks about it a lot, but I didn't notice it when I watched it.

"Auld Lang Syne" is not "American". It's SCOTTISH. You seem to be from the English-speaking world so I'm having a hard time you've never heard of it.

Yeah, that aside, I'm calling bullshit on simply not knowing "Auld Lang Syne." Maybe someone doesn't know the name of the song, but they certainly know the song have literally ever watched a New Year's Eve show in their city or country. So to note it as a United States-only thing is a bit too far-fetched for me to stomach.

I can't believe I'm defending Laytonian, but they weren't hateful in what they said. They were right. There was no name calling or downgrading. They simply said based on previous interactions that they were having a hard time believing the person had never heard of the song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I've heard it before good lord, but I didn't now the name of the song and I haven't only heard it during New Years. I've always taken it as some type of farewell song.

But one thing I will say, people who always feel the need to be so negative on a forum dedicated to an artist and his fans must be living really miserable lives, like we all have one thing in common and it's our appreciation for Prince, so I wish some people would be civil.

I don't think you can really determine the quality of someone's life based on how they treat people on forums. Best to not take it personal - believe it or not, this is how most Prince fan communities are the older and more informed it is.

The org has always been full of sassy people even when it was popping back in the day. It's part of the territory. But the grass ain't really much greener anywhere else and in any other fandom. They all have their spicy spots.

I never calleda anyone names either, nor commented on the quality of their lives. You did.

Now you say you've heard it before? But in your original post you didn't state that. You said "another song" and that he "didn't know the lyrics" (which sort of notes that you didn't either, because if you'd know the song, could you not have identified it by lyric or melody?).

I am being civil, believe me. This is just Sassy Sewell™. lol lol

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

May be an unpopular view: that show was the worst part of the set. It was not a SOTT show, it was much closer to the Lovesexy show. But it was complcated because Prince sold all the rights to the SOTT movie and all the raw footage (used or unused).

2 be honest, I was a little disappointed by the SOTT set. I attended all the Parisian shows: it was always the same songs (if not mistaken), no improvisation so far.

The NYE reflects indeed the transition (the look, the jams) between SOTT & Lovesexy. I like it. Glad that it has been officially released.

Fenwick and I were talking about this. It was a weird mesh of both shows, which were - unto themselves - very different. I don't know why there wasn't even the whole stage setup for it. It just felt very basic. The First Avenue show from 1987 is 100% more engaging.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm from the French speaking world. I've traveled around though and I've heard the song before, just didn't know the name. Why is this important ?

No one seems to have answered my question anyway, you people are always deflecting.

Well they weren't having technical difficulties. He was just being cheeky during an old white people song that nobody really knows in the same vein as Americans who don't know the anthem or other dumb old songs we are taught in school.
