If Prince Would've Released This In 1987...

...it would've been a game-changer!

I'm talking about "In A Large Room With No Light".

Had this been included on "Sign O' The Times" and released and pushed as a single I feel it would've been a big hit and considered one of his classic hits today and collected all the grammies.

Talk about short sightedness.

Am I wrong?

yes you are wrong, and not because it is not a classic Prince song. It is one of the first bootleg songs I heard and was ecstatic when I got a hold of it (original version is best). I think it is amazing but it is not universal to scream hit and grammys (Prince was acknowledged but essentially passed over when it came to those grammys when the ears were out for U2). Even here on the org I would say it has many supporters, but it is not like it is acknowledged as top 5 Prince songs by everybody. I feel you could have made the same argument if Ballad of Dorothy Parker was left off Sign. It is an amazing song, but it would not have been a huge hit single. If we think like Prince than we expect things like "If I was ur girlfriend" to be huge. The general public did not buy records like that.

I frigging LOVE "In A Large Room". It's been my favorite unreleased song since I first heard it years ago. And now that I've got the officially released and remastered version from the SOTT SDE, I'm one happy Prince fan.

.

But it would never have been a big hit. It's too quirky. Maybe in someplace like the UK, or Europe, where they seem to have a better relationship with non-standard pop songs, it might have made some waves.

.

Here in the US, though? Nope.

.

Look at "If I Was Your Girlfriend". Same general non-standard pop vibe. And although being a strong song, it DIED on the Billboard Hot 100.

There's something about the energy of this one that to me makes it different than "Girlfriend", which of course I love and was surprised when it didn't do better.

But we have to remember Prince barely promoted that project in any traditional sense.

Had they pushed "Room", made a nice video and he did a "Tonight Show" appearance I think this song would've been one of THOSE hits.

But of course I could be wrong.

As much as I LOVE the song, I don't think it would have been a huge hit. I think it is one of those songs that would have been lauded as a classic "album track" had it been released on "SOTT", though.

It would have changed nothing. There have been people doing music just as adventurous as that (and moreso), and it changed the game for musicians only. The public didn't notice. They wouldn't have noticed this, either.

Sometimes fans think every other esoteric album cut or outtake woulda been the #1 record-breaking smash hit single that made the world sing.

I wish he would have put it on SOTT back in 1987. I would have played that song to death back then but I get why he did not put it on the album with all the material and original concept he had at the time. I agree with most here, people back then would not have vibed with that song enough to make the top 10 on the charts. To me only deep level fans who are open to all of his variations of material would have dug that song. I love it though, I am gonna go to sleep to it right now so thanks. cloud9
