Prince made a great point once.

I remember home skillet did that interview in Rolling Groan and mentioned how during the 87 Scammies U2 won for the Joshua Tree--Prince said I can write that kind of music, U2 cannot write Housequake. Amen and andy Allo luya.

I'll tell U what the Eye in the Pimp stand 4!

So the q uote is legit but the sources must be demeaned?
Not as cute as intended.

Bono said that when accepting Album of the Year (beating Sign). A fuller quote is: "Without soul, Prince would just be a brilliant song and dance man."

Which bugged me at first as well. Until I saw an old ('60s) clip of Bob Dylan in a press conference. I think it was in Germany. The reporter asked Dylan if he considered himself a folker or a rocker. Dylan replied, "I'm just a song and dance man."

So maybe it was a little too clever of Bono, but it was not the insult it might have seemed.

U2 and Bruce Springsteen are easily two of the most overrated acts in recent music history

Well, I'm much happier with the Joshua Tree win than with Lionel Richie beating Purple Rain (and Springsteen's Born in the USA) in 1984. That was laughable.

The Joshua Tree was a great album.

I don't care about their words back n' forth. The Joshua Tree is, by far, their best record. I still listen to it. They didn't do anniversary tours for any other album other than that one.

U2 is like beer. It's cheap, and an acquired taste. But palpable for some. I don't mind them through Achtung Baby. After that, I sorta fell out of touch with them.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I agree.I actually like Lionel’s ‘Can’t Slow Down’ album but we all know that ‘Purple Rain’ deserved that award.

The Joshua Tree is by far their best album but they have many classic songs from their young angry years. Like most rock bands who have stood the test of time... LOL

Thank you, but I'm pretty sure before that he mentioned soul. When you reveal (something deeper), you have soul.

What Bono said is meant to be a compliment.

Prince is funky, Prince has soul, it sets him apart from the others.

Barely. Seriously, they are pompous and "Bono Vox" is a stupid Latin "translation" for "good voice".

That's ad hominem. We're talking music, not that they call themself some stupid name (like prince or anyone else with a ridiculous moniker).

Whatever anyone thinks about Bono from U2 can be said about Prince. U2 had great music; so did Prince. The end. confused

Well, everyone thinks Bono's comments are disrespectful - but the other way round - to say "hey, I can do your songs easily, but you will never master mine..." - also not nice confused

Prince had a point, of course biggrin

Lionel was the crtiic's darling at that point. His music was "safe",so that's probably why the Grammy voters chose him.Prince was too radical and bold for them lol

CynicKill

But there was no way Prince was beating U2 in 1987.

By that time they had captured the zeitgeist both geopolitically and spiritually.

Meanwhile Prince, while brilliant, had already spent a few years squandering away any "good will" he had with the public.

He was almost obscure, hits aside, if that makes sense.

Probably not but hopefully someone knows what I mean.

I was still mad yet not mad though, because I didn't expect him to win.

And he did sweep Pazz and Jop that year.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day, so Prince making a good point once means he’s halfway to broken clock status.
