Interesting read on Andy Warhol's silkscreens of Prince

Yesterday, I stumbled upon this article about the legalities of Andy Warhol's silkscreens of Prince.

I am not a fan of Justice Thomas - Not even on Thursday nights. But is nice to see his human side.

The gist:

Vanity Fair gave Goldsmith $500 to license her photo for the "Purple Fame" article, with Warhold "adjusting" it.

Warhol then takes that photo and creates more colored prints from it (identical down to every hair tuft) and makes tons of money. He does not pay any licensing money to Goldsmith.

I'm with Goldsmith.
Maybe because I'm seeing so many other people copy Prince photos and sell them as their original art - and there's no difference. If you do art, you should be creating something entirely new and different. Not a computerized-pencil version.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

I have the Warhol prints on the wall in my office. It's my favorite era aesthetically - Controversy. I'm on her side too though. That is the side of the artists. And Warhol, hopefully, could understand that.

I belive the Goldsmith will lose. The work was transformative enough.

you will see when the ruling is announced. it will be nearly unaimous if not unaimous. (and this case has nothing to do with Prince legally)
