Goldnigga
Awful. And that's all I'm going to say about that. Just...awful. Exodus. The second NPG album (thanks nayroo) is a far superior effort than Goldnigga. A lot of good stuff here. Although it took me a while to realise that Prince wasn't singing on a lot (most? all?) of the songs but regardless, whoever it is does a great job. The Good Life and Big Fun are the songs I find myself returning to the most but like I said, a lot of good stuff here. The Gold Experience Yesterday's main course does not disappoint. I loved virtually everything on here with the exception of P Control (although it's growing on me) and We March. But everything else is really good. Shhh and I Hate U are definitely my favourites though. That music video for I Hate U is a work of art too. The court scene is really cool. Up to this point I would have said that Prince in the 90s was ok. Not great but not terrible. But this is a really great album and raises my expectations for the rest of the decade. u may not believe it now but goldnigga holds up better over time than the gold experiience .. eye am going with renato neto as prince most damaging collaborator .. tony m sounds awful at first but then once u get sick of p rapping u can appreciate tony a bit more .. plus the music on goldnigga is crazy good .. exodus is pretty great .. also much better than the gold exp .. gold sounds better at first but sounds awful over time ..

Goldnigga wasn't a recommendation from me, just a suggestion so you can hear how good Exodus is! I'm curious, though, if you laughed your ass off at those two skits, "Mashed Potatoe Girl" and "New Power Day"??? Both Prince clownin' "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

Goldnigga is frustrating to me because the music is so good and I wish it was Prince doing the singing and the rapping.

[Edited 10/24/22 2:09am] How can you say Goldnigga is awful? I always suspect people aren't actually listening to the album when they say that. Prince is on lead vocals or shared lead vocals on the two best tracks and the rest is pure 93 era, laid back, austerely simple and effective funk and RnB. Tony M might not be the best rapper around but I'm always a little skeptical of a group of white folks trashing a rapper when their taste is typically in other genres.

Like for real, "Black MF in the House" is a jam. "Johnny" was a live staple for a few years. We really out here saying Sonny T's vocals are that much better than Tony M's? Why, cuz he ain't rapping? Seems weird to me. Exodus' music surely isn't any better than Goldnigga's. And the songs where Prince is on or sharing the lead, like "The Exodus Has Begun", fit the exact same vibe as the ones he features in on Goldnigga.

I was a baby when this stuff was out. This style of rap music sounds extremely dated to me. Some genres of music sound more dated than others. To my ears, a lot of the Prince stuff I've heard up to this point has a timeless quality to it. The likes of Goldnigga and the rapping on Diamonds & Pearls and Love Symbol sounds really dated to me.

Chaos & Disorder Another decent album. Nothing great here, I don't think, but some pretty good songs. I think this is the first Prince album so far that I feel so indifferent about. There's no standout tracks here but nothing I can say is really bad either. I don't want to say it's boring because I think that would be too harsh but I can't really think of a better word for it. I think my favourite Prince songs are those sexy ballads that he does better than anyone I've ever heard. There's nothing like that here. It's alright though. His weakest solo album of the 90s so far though. And given that it's come directly after The Gold Experience, which I loved, it's disappointing. I've already got a jumpstart on Emancipation but it may take me a while to get through. I'm about halfway through "disc 1" and I've already found what I think will be my favourite song of the set (have a guess which one) but there's a lot here ahead of me.

Many sexy ballads on Emancipation. But, "Joint 2 Joint" got a tap dance solo! "Whatever skin we're in

Same age group, and what is "dated" ? I don't expect something from the 90's to sound "current". If you listen to Snoop Dog or Tupac it may sound dated compared to what's out in 2022.
Just because something sounds how it was supposed to sound in its time doesn't lessen its quality.

C'mon man, non-white here, huge fan of rap history here, and Tony M. is certifiably whack whether you bumped your first rap track yesterday or you're a bonafide hip-hop historian. I like in 1987 Prince is bashing "silly rappers" like, who, we need some name-checks, MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap? Who didn't quite pass the muster for Prince's standard of excellence that Tony M. managed to rise above his previous disaste of the genre?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh this is just too much now. You're comparing Tony M. to Tupac Shakur now, is this for real? Are you trolling? Why not throw Notorious B.I.G. and all nine members of the Wu-Tang Clan in there as well? similar 90s vibe.. k...

Just because something sounds how it was supposed to sound in its time doesn't lessen its quality. Emma, is that you? . In fairness, "dated" is probably not the right word but I can't properly express exactly what I mean. Like, the 1999 album technically sounds dated if we're comparing it to modern music. But I love that album. Goldnigga and some of these rap songs are dated in such a way that I find them almost cringey to listen to. I can't comment on Tupac or Snoop Dogg because other than the big hits, I don't really know their music. But what I have heard sounds very different to Goldnigga and the works of Tony M.

Shelly, if you can find Prince’s withdrawn 1994 album, The Undertaker, definitely listen to that one too. It’s considered by many to be a highlight of the decade. [Edited 10/24/22 14:28pm]

[Edited 10/24/22 14:28pm] I'll add it to the list. Wikipedia is letting me down here. I initially missed Goldnigga and The Time's Pandemonium (which is also now on the list) but that may be down to my own error. Thanks for the heads up. And feel free to recommend anything else I'm missing.

Emancipation This album is very good. Out of 36 songs there's bound to be a few I don't really vibe with but overall, I really like it. The ballads on here are top drawer. Somebody's Somebody is my favourite song on the whole set but there's lots to like here. Betcha By Golly Wow and La La La Means I Love You are exceptional. I know both of these songs from years ago but I prefer these Prince versions. And speaking of covers, I've always associated the song "I Can't Make You Love Me" with George Michael. I know his version was a cover as well but his is the only version I'm really familiar with. So it's a nice gimmick for me to hear Prince do it. And he does it very well. Some other favourites of mine here are Sex In The Summer, Emale, My Computer and surprisingly, Face Down. I feel like I made such a big deal out of disliking the rapping on these albums and then this one came along and won me over  Speaking of being won over, Sleep Around initially annoyed me but then it grew on me. It ended up being one of the highlights on disc 3 along with Style and the title track. Overall, I put this one right up there alongside The Gold Experience. I know the 90s has brought some songs I absolutely do not like but taking everything I've heard so far into consideration, I'm really liking this period. I know it's a big departure from what he was doing in the 80s so I can see why some people were turned off during this time but I'm liking it so far. I have to seek out The Undertaker next before launching into another 3 disc(!) album, Crystal Ball. I don't know why I was under the impression that he released less stuff in the 90s because it seems like this was his busiest period.
