Why all the empty seats ? (Prince Le stade de France 30/07/11 show) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXwV4FAbatc&t=43s&ab_channel=ThePrinceEncyclopedia
I'm watching this specific one and it seems like there's an entire side of the stadium that's empty. Did that tour not do well in Europe ? Lack of promotion ? |

Promotion costs money and the more artists promote the more tickets get scalped and fans have to pay way more for tix. Interpret that how you want. |

I see what you mean. The whole side behind the stage is empty. (and those are probably the best seats) |

They don't fill seats on the sides all the time. Bad seats. And this was a rescheduled show from May, so many ticket holders may not have returned. It's a 55K seat venue and he had over 45K in attendance. Clearly, many seats won't get filled because of either no view, or the stage and crew setup. This all seems pretty obvious.
That's the show where he changes shoes on the piano when "Musicology" starts.
And where the camera guy takes a fall at 44:11.
It's also the show where Prince comes out on stage with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings for like 2 minutes, then leaves. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Makes sense then. |

Obstructed view steating were not offered which is typical. The venue looked nearly sold out based on tickets that were offered. |

But it was limited to 55k according to Princevault: http://princevault.com/in..._June_2011 |

Ergo my original post. The seating doesn't matter to me anyway. 45K people is nothing to sneeze at.

But the point is it's an 81k seat venue and since the tour has a stage set up that was not in the round (like Musicology), they're not gonna sell tickets to the half of the venue that is literally behind the stage. |

But that's for sports events, right? Stadium capacity for concerts is typically much lower, for obvious reasons. |

I was at this show. It didn't sell out, but it had a healthy turnout considering the tour didn't have much notice and there was no product to push.
The video is a bit misleading as it shows the parts of the stand theat were never on sale as they didn't know the final stage set up. The top tear was closed, reducing over all turnout, but it was still a healthy turnout and much in line with the attendance figures of the tour (most of the dates seemed to be around the 10,000 to 30,000 mark).
From a pure profit point of view, it's better to perform to a 3/4 full stadium for one night than it is to perform three nights in a 15,000 seat arena. . |

What I'm saying is, 81k will not be the max capacity for concerts, as the layout is different. All the seats behind/to the side of the stage are not sold. The extra tickets on the floor don't normally make up for that in a stadium.
For example, the old Wembley had a capacity of 80k for football, 72k for concerts. |

If the concert were in the round, he would've sold dozens of thousands more. I'm not saying it was a bad turnout, check my first comment. I'm saying - it's an 81k max capacity stadium and he filled it to 45k with a standard stage set up (allowing for unused sections of the seating, and cutting costs by not shipping the symbol stage) promoting no actual album at all. He did incredibly well where the vibe of the OP is that it seemed like a poor turnout. The truth is that the tour did really well, was exceptionally performed, and the US audiences were almost entirely in the round. |
