Kevin Smith Documentary Footage/Guardian Article

Interesting comment in an interview with Kevin Smith on the Guardian website (English newspaper):

https://www.theguardian.c...old-person

Question: What are the chances of your Prince documentary emerging?

Kevin Smith: “Very high. The director of OJ: Made in America is making a documentary for Netflix, and came to the house to interview me. When they went to the vaults after Prince died, they found so much unreleased music and so many music videos, but the only footage of him talking was what I shot. It’s extraordinary: he acts differently to how he ever acted in his entire life, and he talks for hours and hours. It looks like it’s finally going to see the light.”

The OJ: Made In America director was Ezra Edelman - does this confirm him as the Prince Netflix documentary director?
There may or may not be something coming!

Oh boy. I do remember the 2 clips of Kevin talking about his time there. (there are 2 made at different times). The stuff about the camel is so funny.

Netflix will probably put out "Dahmer on Ice", "Dahmer Cirque du Soleil" and an animated series "Baby Dahmer" before they even put out a teaser trailer for this phantom Purple Rain anniversary doc.

Wan't this confirmed when Ava Duvernay bailed?
It was already posted that he was picked to head the docu series.

I think that was planned to be on Apple TV. Apple bought the streaming rights to the '83 First Avenue Purple Rain show with a documntary.

Thanks Joris, after posting the above I did find some much earlier info about a leak of Ezra taking over (see post by Bart: https://prince.org/msg/7/462938), but it was not confirmed (it’s still not, but the evidence strongly suggests so).

Of course they did.

No, just meant this supposed Netflix documentary that's been "coming soon!" probably since Netflix was a plucky mail-order-based competitor to Blockbuster will probably never come out and if it does come out it'll probably be nothing more than a glorified Purple Rain documentary.... but of course there's already a Purple Rain doc already commisioned by Apple TV... maybe one of these companies can also devote an episode to polling Gen-Z on Prince vs. MJ since they're basking Prince fans in such scintillating, in-demand content.

oh jeez.

It's gonna be some Alan Smithee, Joss Wheadon-taking-over-for-Zack Snyder Justin League reshoot, Richard Donner/Richard Lester Superman 2 hodgepodge amalgam cut-n-paste mish mash of different directors' Purple Rain retreads stitched together by Netflix Labs.

I was so excited to read these new articles, until I also found Kevin Smith talking about the same thing four years ago (but with Ava Duvernay at the helm). It's in flux.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

I am really hoping that they shot the acoustic set at they xenephobia celebration. I would watch that if it was a film

Kevin Smith's story never made the footage sound important, he only sounded fascinated by Prince taking control of the room.

Why wouldn't there be recordings of Prince just talking? Paisley was wired to record, and we know he spent hours with Bible study and thought it was important. When people hold reglar ministry, and take the viewpoint they're having important discussions, it's not unusual to record it. We're given the sense recording sessions could turn into bible study too, at least in later years.

In other words, another announcement on the growing list of announcements with no release date in sight. Got it.

Netflix will be on its 20-year reunion of the Stranger Things cast before we get a formal announcement.
