I think The Ladder is corny, especially in comparison to a song like Purple Rain. You don't KNOW Purple Rain is what it is until you hear it. It starts out one thing and builds up to glorious effect. Literally an equally cryptic lyric as The Ladder, except The Ladder isn't guitar-driven, it isn't live, it wasn't pored over by Prince, and it became a largely forgotten song to most folks. Important to culture? Well yeah, duh. But boring. I don't think anyone knows what a purple rain is anymore than they know what a ladder is. The music is what matters here. The Ladder reveals itself in the first few bars and literally never changes. The Ladder is really driven by the vocal performances therein from both P and the girls. . If The Ladder is a corny song, how could Prince perform it live like he did on the Lovesexy rehearsal video? Cuz prince can make all manner of corny shit sound incredible.

"Sometimes It Snows In April" is actually way more compareable to "Purple Rain". "The Ladder" is also a pseudo-gospel, not a rock ballad. "Whatever skin we're in

No, but I have come to appreciate it a lot more in the past year than before, and I can actually see why you could like it more than Purple Rain. The strings intro is a great touch. Honestly, ''It's Gonna Be Lonely'' is also an overlooked song imho. It's not his best but it has that perfect late 70's yacht-rock vibe, in fact the whole albums has that (for me). Just find that in the frist minutes his vocals are mixed too much to the back. The hook of that chorus is so great, plus that end chord change. And the vocal layers are so sweet. The ending could be longer for me... And ever heard Mac DeMarco's version ? Doesn't even com close, and has over more than 1,4 milion views... I start to like that one after rediscovering the album and some extra 'headphone' spins... You always discover so much more. The greatest live performance of Purple Rain may have been Durng the Welcome 2 America show, April 22, 2011 (look at that date). OR maybe it's because he came up wearing very little (tight white butt-framing pants, a bare-backed floating top thing) and a black scarf wrapped around his head. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

In ‘95 I was happy that he stopped playing Purple Rain live and played Gold instead. I liked it! But Purple Rain is a solid classic, on a whole other level. The Ladder is also one of my favourite Prince songs. Easily up in the top 10.

id say the love we make does the whole epic power ballad thing better too. Agree and the Paisley Park P&M just tops it for me only due to the fact I heard it live and actually bought tears to me eyes

this is the fuckery i'm talking about:
i had to edit this because when i looked at it later it didn't make any sense to me and i know i damn sure didn't have a way to recall what made me type "this is the fuckery i'm talking about" and hopefully i simple "Fair Enough" will suffice [Edited 11/18/22 9:51am] Welcome to "the org", heartpeacesheart…

To each is own on the Ladder vs. Purple Rain question. To me both are great songs in their own way. Both have totally different vibes. I have appreciated The Ladder more over the years but I personally feel a stronger emotion to Purple Rain. [Edited 11/15/22 23:02pm] "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince
