the version with him just on piano seen in an 88 tour rehearsal in the bbc omnibus or prince of paisley park documentary is incredible.

id say the love we make does the whole epic power ballad thing better too.

IMHO, it is not a better song. However the soundcheck on the piano from Lovesexy era is fire !

You cannot be helped or saved lol Purple Rain is one of the great classics of rock while The Ladder is just a good song with bonkers religious lyrics that make zero sense, and I'm a Christian.

I'll tell U what the Eye in the Pimp stand 4!

I agree with Squirrel. I have always loved The Ladder. The BBC version from '88 is incredible. I have always wanted that version in full.

Right! I hope one day we will hear the full version of that, including the sax solo.

Never was a fan of Purple Rain, it was cool during the Super Bowl, but, meh. The Ladder, I've always loved, much better.

As a few have mentioned, the bit of The Ladder from the BBC Omnibus is particularly great. The chords (overdubbed or otherwise), take it to another level.

I love Purple Rain, but it doesn't move me like The Ladder. With Purple Rain, it's like, 'Here's an anthem'. With The Ladder, it's like 'Here's my heart'.

Come on, purple rain may have been polished in the studio, but the video of that show has all the proof. He left it all on the stage that night and it's forever minted in history on wax. The Ladder is a great song, but pales in comparison to Purple Rain in both composition and execution.

Purple rain is cool on the album but the best versions were always live. Like the Atlanta 85 version. The first avebue debut is great but has that unnecessary extra verse. But the feeling on that one is incredible.

This is the best new thread on the Org in ages. SquirrelMeat is right. (Always felt guilty for not liking PR as much as I felt I should.)

There is a fantastic version of The Ladder from the Lovesexy tour rehersals, with Prince at the piano. Gave me a new appreciation of the song. The version on ATWIAD is too overblown for me, and was never a favourite.

As for it being better than Purple Rain? Behave.

PR only really works when it is allowed to fill a full 19-20 minutes.

anything less than that and its merely just okay.

i also dislike the strings on the album version. i dont need them really.
