Contest Song

When I first heard the song, it felt like a Dirty Mind era outtake, because it has that poppy-new wave flair to it; higher energy. But the bridge and breakdown feels way more The Rainbow Children-adjacent. It's assumed it was tracked in 2001.

I wasn't thrilled with any of the three winners, so I don't care much to discuss them here.

So what's your thoughts on it? Was it just a jam? An outtake from TRC?

I liked it a lot actually. To me, it definitely feels like it could've been an early 80s jam (I thought more the cutesy side project stuff around 82-83, think even Velvet Kitty Kat).

That said, it also felt like something you might hear out of the 93-96 NPG from time to time. It definitely felt nothing like the stuff he was releasing at the time. I'm curious if there's a real song. I can't imagine there isn't tbh. It would be so unlike Prince to leave it in there that way and never attach lyrics to it.

To me, it sounds just like what it was intended for.

Like, he recorded it within a few hours all by himself for the sole purpose of that contest.

Quick, cheesey, but still very 'Prince'.

It seemed like the bridge from the much-maligned "plastic" solo production of the NPGMC Chocolate Invasion/Slaughterhouse-era to the more "organic" Rainbow Children band vibe.

It certainly has an eye to the future, as it sounds like he kinda sorta borrowed the melody for Fury. It wouldn't surprise me if Fury came out of him jamming on that song or vice versa.

I don't hear the "Fury" comparison. But I would agree that there is a bit of old and newer Prince in it, at that time. His guitar sound changed a bit (not sure if that was the Hohner, or the prince guitar), and he used to have it under everything. Feels like it had more reverb on it, so it was always there, either with his fingers up and down the strings, or whatever. You can hear that here. Had it been a DM era song (even Controversy), it'd be more clean on the guitar. So that sorta gives away the timeline of it.

There was some of that on Emancipation, too. And oddly I think it could've fit on that album as well. It's a lot like "Damned if I Do," and type.

There are also flourishes, fills, and transitions he does between the sing-songy chorus section and walkabout verse section that would place it in the early to mid 80s but then the breakdown and bridge very much sound like Emancipation era, as you kinda point out. I could see this being an Emancipation outtake. I think, wherever it is from, it is not from 2001. He wasn't even doing pop songs like this at the time.

So what's your thoughts on it? Was it just a jam? An outtake from TRC?

I might be wrong, but, isn't it just the backing track for "21 Guns", whose piano demo leaked a while back?

There's similarities in the chord progression.

That track seemed so out of place.
But that's not uncommon with prince.
I'd also say it fits with the Raindrops Children band vibe.

Just my thinkng.
There is probably a fleshed out version with lyrics.
Forgive me cause I'm no musical expert. So dont shit on me if I get it wrong lol
While its really a short song its seems structured.
Lyrics / Chorus / lyric / chorus / bridge / chorus / lyric / chorus ending.

I've often wondered what were the lyrics about, if there were any. Who knows 🤷‍♂️

That's what I remember reading here on the org. I would have never the connection if it wasnt for the org. But Yes definitely sounds like 21 guns demo
