Was Prince going through personal stuff when he filmed Graffiti Bridge ? This is not a another "Shade Graffiti Bridge" post more like me thinking out loud and I know he was playing a character but something about his energy seems very "down" in the movie, I can't put my finger on it. It makes me wonder whether he was was going through some professional and personal stuff around that time.
Including "Can't stop This feeling I got" would have lifted the mood of the movie by the way. I wish I could see a clear version one day.

The whole movie set was dark and somewhat sinister...kinda like a Batman movie.

One can only speculate, but after the reception of UTCM, a person would have to have balls of steel to have another go at making a proper dramatic film. I'd expect that he was spilling over with confidence, likely spurred on by Batman and SOTT.
So yeah, I'd bet on 'sad, depressed' Prince being just a character choice, and nothing more. [Edited 8/21/22 8:08am]

well... I'm thinking that not being able to use the original scripts he wanted to film and possibly getting the financing before the point he couldn't use the scripts anymore.. he had to make the movie. So throw some ideas about the Time movie and good and evil together with a spiritual sauce and just do it to meet the contracts. I mean, I'm sure not even Prince thought it was good. He was dating Kim Basinger around that time and then that relationship ended.I don’t know if or how it really affected him, though.

I always wondered why he had such little new material for this album. Seemed like most of it was old vault stuff...

But the rest had been earmarked for Purple Rain and/or a potential sequel since at least 1982. Only Tick Tick Bang stands out to me as a weird choice.

I realized that it was around the time that he was rehearsing for the Nude tour and he had the "fight" with Miko where he apologized and revealed that he was in fact under a lot of pressure because he was also shooting a movie.
I guess I answered my own question. It's interesting because even though it was a movie but I could sense something going on with his energy at that time.
In Purple Rain for example, his character is moody but I could clearly sense that he was excited and happy during that time of his life. [Edited 8/23/22 8:03am] [Edited 8/23/22 8:05am]

Better question: Was Prince ever NOT going through "personal stuff"? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think, post Lovesexy, Prince was having partial writers block. He was still churning stuff out, but lyrically he didn't know what he wanted to say and what sound to go with in the face on the changing music scene. .

I really hate that Prince let his love life get in the way of his career.
Imagine if Purple Rain would have been with Vanity or if he would have used Basinger's script for Graffiti Bridge.

an insider who saw that early script described it like this: “it’s about a guy who goes on a search for God.God looks a lot like Kim Basinger” it’s a good thing he didn’t go with that script!

I do think that the late-80s was a challenging period for Prince. The musical landscape had changed considerably.

Jill Jones said that it was much better.
About Purple Rain, Vanity and Prince had a real relationship so the chemistry would have been off the charts, and the movie was meant to be a little darker with Vanity in it. [Edited 9/3/22 9:05am]

Maybe the opiates started to kick in for the first time... who knows. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)
