Incredible Dr Funkenberry conversation with Owen Husney & Tommy Vicari re For You album

This 100 minute Dr Funkenberry conversation, streamed 8/11/22, with Owen Husney and Tommy Vicari about their involvement in the For You album is stunning and worth every minute. Funkenberry wisely sits back for the most part and let Husney and Vicari tell their stories. What a treat to enjoy their recollections of this important part of Prince's career. A must listen.

Interesting listen. My highlights:

Owen, Tommy, Prince lived in one house together during the recording.

Tommy and Prince went to see Star Wars together - remember this was when it first came out.

Prince was introduced to Sly Stone at the studio whilst making For You. Tommy mentions a “changing of the guard and that Tommy thought, “this kid [Prince] is going to kick your [Sly’s] ass”

First meeting with Chaka Khan, after she called the studio, and Tommy said to Prince, “pick it, up say hello”. She thought she was speaking to Sly and went down to the studio. She did end up pinching his cheek, and saying “you’re pretty cute”.

Tommy showed copies of tapes from the For You sessions, including “We’ll Make it through the storm”, dated 11 4 77 (4th November 1977).

Both Owen Husney and Tommy Vicari spoke with great enthusiasm and seemed very proud to have been involved with Prince at an early stage.

That wasnt what Chaka Khan said...she has said in interviews that she was pissed off at P for lying and she left right away...she had thought she was gonna meet up with Sly and get high...not be pranked by a tiny unknown kid from Minnesota

Y'all need to read Owen Husney's book "Famous People Who've Met Me". There's very little new in that Dr F podcast and the book has MUCH MORE detail, as well as great photos.

Stop buying fan books and buy books from Prince associates. THAT is how you suss out the truth. And yes, that "pretty cute" thing and Chaka is something i've never heard before. She was PISSED when she got there and found out who had answered the phone (or called her, some confusion).

Really enjoyed this. Dr. Finkenberry has become such a preofessional and is a great interviewer. Probably the best Prince one, IMO. Aside from knowing so much, as another poster here said, he definitely knows how to allow his subjects to speak.

Totally agree about giving (most of) the fan books a wide berth. Owen’s book is good source material, of course. Tommy Vicari doesn’t appear to have spoken much about his time working with Prince (well not published anyway), so hearing him talk about the Chaka Khan incident, sheds a bit new light on it.
