Agree 100%! Never understood why this wasn't a single - was my favorite song on Controversy from the moment I bought the album!

It is super catchy and surely would have been a radio hit, had it been released. Great song.

Anyone know the story behind the cover version by Cheyne on the Weird Science soundtrack???

With a cover version, they only have to pay licensing fees to the songwriter.
Using the artist's original release would be waaay more expensive, especially with Prince's heights at the time of filming.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Release this as if it is the latest new thing.

Promote it as if it is the latest new thing.

Be goddman creative!

-

Have some damn surprising remixs done by Anderson .Paak, Questlove/Q-tip, Lizzo, Jacques Lu Cont, Lady Gaga, Dua Lippa, Bruno Mars, etc.

-

It's worth it!

Such a great track.

Always been.

And always will be!

Who knows, maybe there's a extended version some where in the vault...

I wonder if the reason Prince never released it as a single, is because the the keyboard hook that drives the song was lifted/borrowed/stolen from the Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons 1975 hit single "Who Loves You"

In my opinion, 'Private Joy' and 'Extralovable' were two sensational hits that were never to be. Imagine both of them on a greatest hits album along with 'I Wanna Be Your Lover', '1999', 'Little Red Corvette' and 'When Doves Cry'. cloud9

A former partner of mine tolerated a lot of Prince music in our time together. Extralovable '82 was one of the only songs he ever perked up at and liked (he also liked some of the hits). What never was...!

I hear (but had to listen closely) what you mean, but the chord progressions for that hook is pure coincidental, and quite logic when you play it on a keyboard.

Sure i could be that he heard this song.

But not enough to say that it's the reason why it was hold back for a single release.

Was never a big fan of Controversy (the album). Not nearly as good as Dirty Mind, and too much rather average material (Annie Christian, Sexuality, Ronnie Talk 2 Russia). Even the title song I never really cared for. Private Joy along with Let's Work saves the album, and Do Me Baby is decent too (although a bit overdone for me).

Many of us have called it experimental, or a segue album between a change in sounds.

But experimental or not, I don't think Controversy has a bad song on it.

Like, pound for pound, Controversy is just a better album.

Controversy's guaranteed bangers:
Controversy
Sexuality
Do Me Baby
Private Joy
Let's Work
Annie Christian

Dirty Mind's guaranteed bangers:
Dirty Mind
When U Were Mine
Uptown
Head

How is this even a comparison?

Please can someone help me understand how Do It All Night, Sister, and Partyup could ever exist on an album considered better than Controversy?

Jack U Off is still a classic and it's distinctly Prince. That's Prince being the Prince we all know and love for damn near the first time.

Fine, Ronnie is a goofy song. Okay. But he just blew your brains out with Private Joy and that solo a second ago so you need some time to get your shit together anyway. Then the album continues to destroy your mind all over again.

And let's not even talk about how the melodies and the range of sounds are just better on Controversy. DM is filled with an extremely squeaky keyboard on every fucking song. And his falsetto never sounded more nasal than that record. No no no.
