Great album with some really good songs like Paisley Park, Pop Life and The Ladder. I have an alternate version of the song Around the world in a day and it's far better than the album version.

The one with the bass? That is amazing. I have it, but my copy is terrible, like you're listening to it through a pillow.

Come to think of it, a recurring discussion here on the Org is: "What bootlegs do you want officially released so that you have a better sounding copy?" When I read those posts, ATWIAD never crosses my mind... but it should. Next time that topic comes up, I need to remember ATWIAD. I would love a copy with decent audio quality.

Hopefully this link (for The Wire magazine, August 2016, issue 390) works for you (even if for one go before it goes behind a paywall), as it explains about the characters on the sleeve (Doug Henders artwork). There was meant to be an image of Big Chick with a tiger, but was airbrushed out when they fell out.

My copy of the Wire magazine arrived, and here are a few parts of it: from the


“critics assumed that Prince had been influenced by the psychedelia of The Beatles…comparisons were no doubt encouraged by the sleeve artwork; Doug Henders admitted he had Peter Blake's cover for Sgt Pepper in mind when planning the composition and colour spectrum.”

“Prince gave Henders a 15 point outline detailing the people he wanted the painting to feature. Henders took Polaroids of The Revolution's members and friends, remixing their appearances to fit the concepts. "Most of the figures on the cover are characters in the songs," Henders told Uptown magazine, "but I think some of the people Prince wanted are parts of himself."

“From left to right as you look at the complete panorama: an aged Wendy Melvin crying because her cheating husband "died without knowing forgiveness", as the song "Paisley Park"puts it; silent movie actress Renée Adorée, wearing a raspberry coloured beret and holding the apple of temptation; Prince's then fiancée Susannah Melvoin playing the violin; a red wig-wearing, ice cream-licking Sheila E; bassist Brownmark holding Prince’s cloud guitar as seen in Purple Rain, and wearing a beautiful cloud suit* that Prince would go on to have made for the "Raspberry Beret" video; a cheeky Clara Bow, adjusting her skirt at the waist; with pale make-up and holding a tambourine, drummer Bobby Z; and finally an aged Prince, disguised behind keyboardist Doctor Fink's surgeon's outfit… a jet plane about to rupture the tranquility of the park; the satanic-looking temptress climbing over the wall.”

“Henders was part of the [Purple Rain] tour's crew: his main role was as set dresser but other duties included taping live shows. He took time out to finish his painting in a hotel in Los Angeles, and asked Prince's manager to book an airline seat so it wouldn't get damaged in the hold”.

“the reclining nude landscape rendered in a pop coloured camouflage pattern. Henders had previously been a US Army cartographer stationed in Germany, and picked up an interest in camouflage.”

“the empty space to the left of Susannah was originally filled by a depiction of Prince's bodyguard Big Chick hugging a tiger, but that after an acrimonious split Prince had asked him to be airbrushed out - a shame, as ‘everyone loved Chick’.”
[I understand that Doug Henders did not document his cover with Chick on it.]

“The interior gatefold illustration was by another artist, Dan Chapman…[in] his artwork…there are double rainbows in the sky, just like the ones that appeared in the sky above the real Paisley Park, only hours after Prince died”.

One thing that surprised me was this was recorded before PRs release.

Kinda amazing to think how ppl saw it as a response to PR and its success but prince had it all mapped out earlier.

That's not true, now is it?

Most of side A wasa recorded in the late summer through early winter of 1984 while on tour.

"The Ladder" was recorded in the same time frame, on the tour.

"Temptation" was recorded at the end of 1984, after "The Ladder."

"America" was recorded right when PR was released, almost to the very day.

So only "Raspberry Beret" dates well before PR was released.

Seems like you'd know that before posting something that is 99% untrue.
