I think he means reprises. Obviously a sequel would be a continuation of the story in a song. Like imagine another song about Nikki and what happened when he ran across her again, etc.

New Power Generation does not have a sequel. It has a reprise. Or, the additional part of the ending that he chopped off and slapped at the end for whatever reason.

If we're talking sequels, "New Power Generation" is definitely not an example. It's a song split in two parts, really. I spliced them together long ago for my GB playlist.

The only real sequel I can think of "Take Me With U" and "Raspberry Beret." They're just about the same damn song, the story of the Kid and Apollonia in the barn is also in the PR trailer, but not in the movie.

You could even go deeper when he said, "He told me several times that he didn't like my kind, said I was a bit too leisurely."
Translated, one could surmise that Billy is Mr. McGee, and Billy's annoyance at The Kid with playing that "one song shit," and taking a laxed attitude toward his band and his music is what Prince is talking about here.
In the video, the obvious rain references are there. One could go on.

Prince had common themes that continued a conversation more than a narrative.

Janet did a very similar thing with "Let's Wait Awhile." "I promise, I'll be worth the wait."

In "Someday is Tonight," she starts with "When I said someday we'd be together? Well, someday is tonight."

Prince didn't really do sequels. What he was good at was shuffling his own music to make something entirely new. The EPs for Gett Off, New Power Generation, and Cream are prime examples.

While "May U Live 2 See the Dawn" was never a song, the mantra has a sequel in "Welcome 2 The Dawn."

The real middle finger sequel is him releasing a song called "My Name is Prince," and changing it eight-and-a-half months later.

.
I rememeber that when the ATWIAD album came out, some reviewers referred to "The Ladder" as "Purple Rain part 2".
.
Also, the whole story line of the movie Graffiti Bridge is clearly modelled after the PR movie. So, it is a bit easy to say that Prince didn't like the concept of sequels.
.
But in general, he always seemed to search for something new, not to build on previous ideas, even making radical changes between albums during his peak years in the 80s (although I'm sure we can still find some examples in of rehashed themes or ideas in his songs if we look closely).

I agree that it's more a reprise, but as we know, Prince did call it part II, so I can see where the OP is coming from.

Formerly TheDigitalGardener etc.

So that makes ‘What’s My Name?’ a sequel to ‘My Name Is Prince’.
There may or may not be something coming!

So … a Manic Monday is what you have after you party like it's 1999?

Plus, those really are the same song.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

There's the Last Decemeber Reprise.

Affirmation III is basically a resprise or continuation of Way Back Home.

To a lesser extent, Back 2 the Lotus is somewhat of a reprise of From the Lotus.

What about “4 Lust” being the sequel to “For Love”?

And “Wet Dream’s Cousin” after “Wet Dream”.

Perhaps, “18 & Over” and “Come”.

Edit: “Wonderful Day” and “It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night”!k

I mean, if we're going down that road, we can talk about how all of ATWIAD used the Purple Rain blueprint to a T.

I actually thought of another unintentional sequel. "For You" to "Had U."

The first one was about love, the second was about a breakup; a rather nasty one I might add.

This is when it gets into the territory of people claiming Purple Rain was followed up by The Ladder, Gold, The Cross, etc.

I think there are examples, but we as fans forget or miss them entirely.

What's more interesting is how often he went back to the same grooves, and re-used patterns more or less. It makes songs feel related.

I always thought that "Lady Cab Driver" was a sequel/update of "Annie Christian". The "1999" album (to me) was a continuation of sorts to "Controversy".

WB wanted a Purple Rain sequel and UTCM was not it. Hence, Graffiti Bridge's similarities to PR.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

One can read on the wiki page of The Work for years :

There has been no "part 2" released to date, although the title track to the 2004 album Musicology bears a strong resemblance and some fans have dubbed it "The Work, pt 2".[citation needed]

You ve got that half right on this one.
Had U is about a breakup indeed, the one with WB, after such a " Chaos and disorder ".
Each line refers chronologically to one Prince album. The last one being for C&D,

The Vault is the joyful side of that breakup.
While in C&D Prince was bitter, on the Vault he remembers his relationship with WB to be " Extraordinary ", and this time that breakup is no C&D, but " The best day of the rest of his life".

Prince just took one CD worth of material amd broke it in two sides of the same coin, when offered to WB in 1996.
As in every relationship broken, you are bitter first, then you remember the good old days. That's the message Prince sent to WB.

Yeah and the song “Thieves In The Temple” is lyrically similiar to “When Doves Cry”.

“How can you just leave me standing?”…”you said you love me!”….”my only friend is you”

It is not too strange that *some* people feel a connection between Purple Rain and The Ladder. Both songs are ballads dealing with a spiritual theme, where the song title is chosen metaphorically. Both compositions contain melodic phrases with a string of eight notes in static pitch ("only want to see you bathing..." and "everybody is looking for the ..."), evoking a similar melodic character, while the harmonic structure of both tunes is clearly gospel inspired, with a plagal cadence going back from the IV chord to the I chord through the iii and ii chords. And of course, it helped that the songs are on subsequent albums, each containing a string interlude, and were positioned at or near the end of the album's closure...

But you can probably come up with more differences than similarities

"Another aspect of the End of Days according to Prince is the salvation of the soul prior to ascending into Heaven, which is discussed in “The Ladder” from Around the World in A Day (1985). “The steps U take are no easy road,” Prince admits in the chorus. “But the reward is great / 4 those who want 2 go.” In other words, the path to salvation is difficult, but the end result is well worth the struggles experi-enced. And what is at the top of the ladder? “Purple Rain.”

Earlier, it was established that purple is the color of the apocalypse. Rain is the dispersion of water, and in the Bible, it symbolizes the concepts of destruction and renewal (think the Great Flood and the rite of baptism). “Purple Rain,” then, can be seen as a metaphorical renewal or rebirth of the soul upon the coming of the apocalypse—a sort of preparatory cleansing of sin from the soul before its ascent into Heaven."
