coco boys released version v.s. "finished" tracking which one you like better? the early mixdown that was circulating or the released version on the sott sde.

Both mixes are pretty close, with some minor differences of a few additional minor lyrics and ad libs. Overall I like the released version the most as it does feel completed and fully realized. “To create something from nothing is one of the greatest feelings, and I would – I don’t know, I wish it upon everybody. It’s heaven.” – Prince

I think he did the spoken word moody gig better on Joy in Repetition.

The unreleased version is far superior imo. The "Cocoa Boys" version on SOTT is too busy with the audience overdubs. It may have got a pass if he'd kept the ad-lib horns. Formerly TheDigitalGardener etc.

the released version omits/changes much of the story... "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

The version without the horns and overdubs is WAY better...should have been a hit record

I like how Prince 'sang' the horns on the unreleased. (but maybe that was standard as guide?) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Yes, singing the horn parts gives the unreleased version wonderfully freakish character. More importantly, the audience's noises for the entire duation of the song is massively distracting - while most of it is drowned out by the instrumentation, the HIGH-PITCHED CLAPPING remains audible slightly left of center, sounding nothing like claps, more like crawling insects. IRRITATING!

I use the guitar bit, after the false fade ending, from the leaked, unreleased version, as my ring tone because it is so funky. I was disappointed with the released version with the crowd noise and real horns but still like it. Not as much as the “skat” leaked one though. Maybe the next “Originals” could be Prince’s guide skatting horn versions before Eric Leeds/NPG Hornz added the real instruments! There may or may not be something coming!

i really do think this track is one of his all time greats. as others have said, it contains nearly every SOTT era motif on top of being an extremely unique and engaging composition.

I would go for the released version. I prefer the real horns on there. Something BIG Is Coming.
