I just heard the whole show on the Prince channel on SiriusXM. I am amazed how good it sounds. I have had this for years and wasn't planning on picking this one up...well I just ordered it. I even like the Yankee Doodle Dandy part...the part of the show I usually skip. SOO deep and clear. A definite improvement.

I agree, it sounds really good so I bought it on Tidal smile

Got my copy yesterday, usually get it a day or two prior at my local store. I went with the Cd package with the blu ray, wasnt too interested going all out for the vinyl set or that super deluxe on the site. Not to crazy about getting live or outtakes sets on Vinyl mainly cause of the cost, with this the cd and bluray of the show did fine, I did see that the Vinyl Box was basically the same, the book was same length just the overall size obviously because of the package is bigger. Plus I am sure now seeing how amazon has been doing these sales after a few months on sets, I mind find the vinyl there new for half the price it is now. Someone recently got the Welcome 2 America set with everything, for 30 bucks.

I'm happy with this release eventhough, we know this concert. I watched it when It was broadcasted in 1985.

My complaints:

-I prefer the previous artwork used for the digital version in 2020. By the way, I'm fine with Bernie's version (including the drop-out in "Purple Rain").

-Weird that for the CD version, "Computer Blue" is included on CD1 (contrary to what is listed on Princevault*) and not on CD2: I think there's room enough & it would have make sense to B sequenced with "Darling Nikki".

My C120 audio cassette was ok this way as the VHS.

First off, I can't believe there isn't a sticky for this release. I know it's a rerelease but you would think the mods would make it somewhat of a deal considering the lack of engagement lately.

-

I haven't seen the full concert but it does look and sound great from what I've seen.
As far as the audio itself, I am really impressed with the "remix". Although, I do feel the synths get pushed back into the mix in places they were really prominent that I got used to. Most notably in Computer Blue and the Syracuse specific chord progression in When Doves Cry (a true highlight).

-

I will always love more Prince content, but the return to focus on Purple Rain era/material (especially stuff we've seen numerous times) is starting to really get irritating. No shade on the effort by the estate because it is full out and I appreciate the sentiment. They just better put this much effort and then some when/if they would do a Parade or Lovesexy expanded release.

*high doubts on Lovesexy but that concert deserves a remastered release!

Does anyone think the cd / blu got redsesigned at some point as the picture for the pre-order shows it more like LP sized and the inserts dont look like that on the actual release

also no sticker/pass/magnet or whatever that lil thing shown is

Listening to the full HD Tracks version today, and it really is like night and day, especially when you compare it back to back with the previous version. I don't think I've ever truly enjoyed this show until now. I guess it was the shitty audio?

I had the same thought. There are so many musical moments I am loving now that I can hear them. Brownmark’s bass play iS just super. It is all so much more clear and I think Chris James the man responsible for the audio is a magician.

As for the cd…will get to that tomorrow.

The one clip I went straight to was him coming in with the cloud during the start of Purple Tain. It was roaring just as I had hoped. Once again, a great release in terms of sound.

Watched the entire concert tonight with the Atmos mix-- while they didn't take advantage of the capabilitiyes of Atmos too much, the audio is a HUGE improvement over past versions.

The video? I'd need to do a side-by-side comparison, but I'm not noticing much improvemnt over the previous DVD released with PR Deluxe. It's still a rough watch. Thankfully I went in with really low expectations because I know the limitations of the source material.

Fully agree to most of the things that were said before.

Even though I wonder whether the audio was altered even a bit too courageous here and there, it sounds fantastic on the 5.1 True HD track. They put the audience noise on the rear satellites so it really gives you stadium atmosphere at home. It's like a whole new experience.

The picture quality is a bit disappointing if you ask me. In particularly if you go closer to your flatscreen, the picture looks very grained. It seems as if the close ups do quite ok but the wide shots are very grained. Some restored movies from the 50ies and 60ies look way better.

I am also a bit irritated by the absence of any bonus stuff. If they had the Revolution at hand for the podcast, they could have done at least a 60 minutes bonus documentary and/or an additional audio track with comments.

I expected the package to be bigger and was a bit surprised when that small parcvel was handed to me by the delivery guy.

All in all, I am not discontent with what I got. But I've watched that show a million times before, and now it's better soundwise and I've watched it again, but I have still have watched it a million times before.

I want the next deluxe rerelease like SOTT in 2020 which will keep me entertained for weeks.

Which prooves that real Prince fans are never content. smile

A good bonus would have been "When Doves Cry" without the split mirror effect.

The difference is those movies were shot on film vs. video. Nothing shot on video will ever have a truly HD picture, in the way something shot on film does, even if it's released on a Blu-ray disc. It's just a limit of the medium.

Yes, unfortunately. Nearly everything from the 80s, 90s, and early 00s was shot on video, save for his films. I thought I had read that the live footage for The Second Coming was shot on film. I don't know about how much was filmed and what the quality is of the film, but it would be incredible to see it full stop, but especially in HD.

That final guitar solo in Purple Rain, after the count, is just fucking beyond. For someone who was bored to death of that show by then, he sure did know how to fake it.

Maybe he got an extra kick out of knowing that it was broadcasted worldwide.

Thanks for the explanation concerning video vs. film.

How comes the SOTT movie released by Turbine looks so awesome on BluRay?

It's film, not video. Right?

Yes, it's film, except for U Got The Look, which is why that clip looks so horrible in comparison. I saw it on the big screen recently, and the difference between that clip and the rest of the film was even more striking.

From what I ve seen on YouTube, the Picture still looks terrible.
Plus, I read here the split effect on WDC is still there (!).

I hated this live when bought on the PR deluxe.

So I don't need to buy it, and I probably won't, even if on sales for like ten euros.
Friends of mine fans of Prince won't buy it neither.
.
I m more interested on Gold, never bought it on CD, and my pirated copy didn't include the segues and TMBGITW remix. At least that would be a little novelty to me.

I wasn’t excited about this release but the sound is really good. You can actually hear the bass and guitar parts much more clearly. The pic is pretty good for a crappy video

I think those in charge definitely recognize the importance of sound. Every release has been superb for sound quality. I am talking 2 channel stereo and surround ATMOS.

With the effort put into this video, I can expect excitedly same treatment for future video releases. It is wonderful and hopeful news

Just got the set. Decent package. However an odd thing to decide to release in such a big way. Was hoping that the quality of the blu ray would make it all worthwhile but it’s a mess. All they seem to have done is oversaturate it, blow out all the whites and set sharpness to infinity.

Still have to say the best way to watch this in on old standard (non lcd) TV on VHS.

Amazon shipped my order yesterday. It has been "out for delivery" since 5 am by "UPS surepost"
The email said I was gonna get it today by 8 pm and here it is now 11 pm...
And I have been constantly looking out the window all day for the damn UPS man.
Maybe it will come Monday.
I did however view the PBS special of the syracuse concert. The audio and picture look absolutely amazing to me and all the while I was thinking there is no way they show the performance of "Darling nikki" on the same station that use to show Lawrence welk
Boy was I wrong.PBS has grown a pair of balls after all these years.

Im not expecting much from the blu ray, the estate doesnt seem to know how to deal with old footage appropriately, eg the 1999tour dvd, but hey, i hope the cd sounds as good as people say.

So PBS used the "Live performance from the Purple Rain Tour" as a fundraiser. Cut out about 1/4 of the concert.

One of the weirdest breaks returned back into Darling Nikki. I still can't get over those girls trying to hoist themselves onto the stage.

The singalongs clearly established that Prince was personally responsible for the downfall of teenage girl morality in the 1980s. (Tipper Gore said so.)
