A Bad Prince Record

Make your own 10-12 song bad Prince record, using only officially released songs from the Warner recorded years, through 1996 (Chaos and Disorder being the end of the era). This includes b-sides, but not remixes. We can't delve into a Junior Vasquez, or all the takes on "Cream" and "Gett Off" or whoever mix to make a list.

Everything from Emancipation and after that is spotty as a default, so it'd be pointless to wade through that here.

I'll start, with a small caviat (one being recorded in the WB years, but released much later).

  1. Rebirth of the Flesh
  2. Life Can Be So Nice
  3. Arrogance
  4. The Cross
  5. Jughead
  6. Lemon Crush
  7. Shy
  8. Push
  9. Money Don't Matter 2 Nite
  10. Superfunkycalifragisexy
  11. It
  12. Girl

There are others, but these are some of the worst offenders, to me. Let's see yours. 1979-1996 only.

I forgot to say. I totally agree with your list except Rebirth and supercali!

I searched through his massive output for hours and hours and came up with this list:

  1. Chaos And Disorder (4:18)
  2. I Like It There (3:15)
  3. Dinner With Delores (2:45)
  4. The Same December (3:23)
  5. Right The Wrong (4:38)
  6. Zannalee (2:43)
  7. I Rock, Therefore I Am (6:14)
  8. Into The Light (2:46)
  9. I Will (3:35)
  10. Dig U Better Dead (4:00)
  11. Had U (1:25)

  1. Delirious
  2. Forever In My Life
  3. I Love U In Me
  4. Scarlet Pussy
  5. The Ladder
  6. Hot Thing
  7. International Lover
  8. Anotherloverholenyohead
  9. The Arms Of Orion
  10. God
  11. Free

Just to make it slightly more challenging, I kept it confined to the 80's. Very ballad heavy, but a lot of my least favorite golden era Prince songs are ballads. I'd probably buy this album just to smash it with a hammer, honestly lol

Yeah. Totally agreed. I almost did the same thing and restricted it to pre lovesexy for that reason!

Agree with your most of your list except scarlet, delirious, international and then the head scratcher

Can’t believe another lover could be on anyone’s list!

1. In Love
2. International Lover

3. God
4. Girl
5. Slow Love
6. The Arms of Orion
7. Trust
6. I Love U in Me
9. Thieves in the Temple
10. Thunder
11. Damn U
12. Come

I listed them in chronological order. I thought about putting some more thought into the sequence, but with songs this bad there's no point.

I would have included some more ballads (such as I Hate U), but I wanted to limit the list to 12 songs. I'm not anti-ballad by any stretch. In fact, some of my favorite Prince songs are ballads: Free, Condition of the Hearth, Sometimes it Snows in April, Adore. Those are all unique, original songs. In contrast, I think a lot of his other ballads were derivative and/or too sappy.

But I won't. To each his own...

I'm not sure what the beef with for you with that, but I wonder - is it Tony M? Cuz I have a mostly Tony M. free version that, frankly, is highly superior. Same with Diamonds and Pearls. (Although, the second half of that record is a shit show compared to the first half of incredible, and strong songs. I took me years to get into D&P for that reason and Tony M.)

I enjoy the density and thickness of prince. It's a little overdone in spots, but nothing I can't deal with, really. I don't have "Arrogance" in my digital files, so I don't even miss it.

I won't lie, Tony M plays a big part in my hatred for a lot of Prince's early 90s output. But it's not all his fault. There isn't one song on the Love Symbol album that I would go out of my way to listen to. At best, it's just a really boring album. But it's also extremely cringey in places and borderline embarrassing in others. It's hard to believe that the same man put out Sign Of The Times just 5 years earlier.
