Blu-ray, blimey. Good spot

2 CD set with 1 blu ray.

3 LP set with 1 blu ray.

Release date....6.3.2022

Bernie Grundman remaster.

To avoid confusion with the rest of the world, apart from the USA, the release date is scheduled for 3rd June 2022.

So are you saying that this will not be released in the USA?

Ah, sorry for even more confusion! As far as I know it will be available worldwide, it was more the date format, the USA way of saying 6/3/22, might get non-Americans thinking it was already released on 6th March. Hope that’s clear now đŸ¤”
There may or may not be something coming!

Well. That's the worst cover art seen since bootleg history tbh.

How over the top coloured, photoshopped by a drunk it seems, and that horrible face at the right... ?!

I mean seriously ?

This probably is a photo of a copy of a photo of a copy of a photo, done on a cheap scanner.

Everything about the looks of it looks cheap, over the top colours and low end assemblage work.

By the way,

this concert... i mean how many time do we (Prince fans) have it already in i-don't-know-how-many formats ?

And I don't believe the Blue Ray quality is going to be all that good.

What will the source be? Just a VHS video ?

At the time when it was filmed, it wasn't even filmed with the best equipment from what i heard and read on instagram and twitter.

So don't get your hopes high on this one.

-

This time it's the Blue*Ray thing that will make most fans want to have it.

It's a shor money grabber for the company who will release it, but I'm not convinced at all

(yet).

Again, let's hope I'm dead wrong and it is fantastic.

But my hopes are super low for now, based on what I know.

By the way, live albums on vinyl... you have to love 'm.

From all that I've heard about this release, this seems like great step in the right direction for future Legacy reissues (a usually complaining fan finally praising an official release, shocking).

Going off of the info I've heard, I will say a remix from the 2" masters is a great idea. Get David Z. to doll it up to 5.1 (or hell, 7.1 like the W2A BluRay) and do a recreation of the stereo mix. Adding the original stereo mix from the half-inch masters would be nice (and truer to a reissue) but not a deal breaker, especially since that was already remastered for that streaming benefit concert they did.

As for video quality, I'm sure whatever we'll get will be an upgrade over the Purple Rain DVD, maybe they'll actually use the master this time... without the mirroring (like the original broadcast). I've got a few concerts on BluRay that are tape sources upscaled to 1080i with lossless audio, they all look pretty good, lots of light and dark spots in them where you can better see the benefits of the upscaling. IMO, anything without the now-ancient MPEG compression of DVD and the inconsistent bitrate of a YT stream is a win. What I'm hoping they aren't doing is something like that job on the upload of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", the VHS tapes that Bellmark originally out to stores looked 10x better in terms of lighting.

If this ends up being good, hopefully we can see stuff like this for Dortmund '88 (we NEED the soundcheck footage for this, it would be ridiculous not to have it). Just my 2 cents...

What a waste of wax.
The bluray and CD was enough.
Keep the wax for the SDEs.

You are not the authority on what is a waste of wax. there are numerous fans who ASKED for it to be released on vinyl. Just don;t buy it if you don't like/want it, it's really easy.

What's the point of this already released concert in vinyl, compared to am SDE.
SDE should be the priority, or at least something never released before.

Because the fans specifically asked for it and it's easy and fast to release.

There priority is the SDE's and they are working on multipe at a time (according to someone who knows a lot more than we) and have een for the last few years. So, do you want a SDE or do you want a properly curated SDE?

Yeah, disagreeing is one thing, debating something is fine. But bickering and the negative know-it-all bullshit (a la BVH) is intolerable.

Some people are just happy in their misery.

An SDE every year, they have enough material for this.
When they gave up Parade SDE for D&P, that was because they knew they had enough material to release it faster.

I agree.

They seem to be stuck on Purple Rain. For god's sake, move on and explore the other 38 years of his career. I understand that the casual fan may be more interested in that single album, but I'm not sure casual fans are buying any of this. Either way, there's money to be made off the hardcore fan if they'd just offer to sell us stuff.

It really is sobering to realize, after all of these years, that Prince was right when he called Purple Rain "the albatross around his neck." It's the singular thing that made him a true household name. And even though he never sold out, by riding that wave that PR created, that wave was strong af. It's still the only thing he did that is still resonates to the masses.

They're honestly not going to consider "the hardcore fan." There's no real money coming from "the hardcore fan."

I think Wendy said it best when she said, "the audience wanted the movie." They were reenacting parts of the movie, and in the moment, in 1984, it worked. It gave the audience what it wanted. The marrying of the older fans who knew a straight-forward Prince concert with the newbie fans who were still watching the movie on VHS or Beta.

But even two years later, maybe it didn't work quite as much. Ten years or twenty years later and it feels more like a historical document. Not to be dismissed as nothing. But it was what it was.

Prince's stage shows were never that exciting visually, to that point. The reflective blinds, the same stage, in general, for Controversy and 1999 tours. The outfits were bumped up a notch, but even both tours started with the same opening number. The added theatrics (aka the awkwardness of Mark and Wendy on a date; the blowing curtains; the talks with God; the endless monotone droning on about "can u see me?"; etc) for the PR tour didn't add much to the equation. I mean, Lisa and Matt were holding down the same notes so long, they could've used Scotchâ„¢ tape to hold those keys down and take a fucking smoke break while Prince was rattling on about ...well, whatever it was. It added to the "ohhh, he's so mysterious" hype. Was he, though?

If you take out those sections, and the Yankee Doodle section, and tighten it up, it's about a 90 minute show, which means there are 30-minutes of horseshit. beatdeadhorse

I think for me, the quasi-theatrics aside, the tour never hit quite as much as I would've hoped because of the sound. It needs a bit less treble, and a bit more bass. It lacks a mid-section, a thickness. The aural texture is like sitting on pins and needles while someone bangs on a trash can lid with a wooden spoon, right next to your head.

Will the remastering help some of that? Time will tell, but if the streaming is any indication, I say probably not as much as we'd hope. The visuals of the tour - well, he was hot as the sun during that time, and that along is worth the watch. Is it one I go back to often? Not really.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The sound is what kills me the most!! It is so loud and clangy, there is zero bottom in most of these shows it seems and that's weird because there is plenty bass all over the record.

I feel like we've never gotten the actual Revolution sound in a live show before because it switched up the next tour to be a jazz review.
