If those are the definitive original recording sources, then that makes sense.

Some of it was sourced from cassette, yes Udo is correct...

Since i've got this boxset (http://1986boxset.blogspot.com) a few years ago, i only listen to this remastered version of the Black Album. Really great!

I own this vinyl and I do have to say that it sounds better than any other copy of TBA that I've heard. If the Estate reissues the album on vinyl, I'd still spin this one more often, I think.

@MIINsane was talking about a scenario where the Estate "reissues" the Black Album. I believe he meant if the Estate reissues it as part of the Sony Legacy releases. That would mean without remastering, so you can't compare it to the 1999 and SOTT remasters.

If the estate were to reissue the Black Album without remastering or tinkering with it in any way (so that it has the same exact sound quality as the official 1994 release), I'd continued to consider Foefor's "remaster" as my default and listen to it more than the offiical re-release.

I don't claim to be an audiophile. In most cases, I can't hear differences in sound quality of releases. For example, the remasters of 1999 and SOTT sound the same to me as the original versions. I have unsophisticated ears.

But The Black Album is the exception. I think the offical release sounds like you're listening to it through gauze. I understand that Foefor didn't truly remaster it (he just tinkered with the EQ), but regardless, his version is vastly superior, at least to my unsophisticated ears.

So yes, I'd continue to spin the bootleg CD rather than the reissue. If vinyl was my prefered media, I'd continue to spin that version.

The '87 vinyl sounds great and the '94 CD is said to be identical to the '87 CD and that one like all Prince's 80's CD's was mastered on the cheap and fast, so a proper remaster would be great for the CD version at least.
